Gargoyles can be assigned as a Slayer task by various Slayer masters at level 75 Slayer, level 80 combat, and with completion of the Priest in Peril quest. They are only found in the Slayer Tower, either on the top floor or in the basement. The gargoyles in the basement of the Slayer Tower can only be killed while on a Slayer task, as Raulyn will stop the player if they attempt to fight them off-task. Gargoyles have a Superior slayer monster variant, the level 349 marble gargoyle. Unlike regular gargoyles, the marble gargoyle also utilises ranged attacks. It also has a special attack, launching a white-red orb that deals heavy damage and entraps the player if not dodged; this attack has a 1x1 AoE.
Gargoyles are weak to both magic and crush attacks, but melee is commonly used due to the lack of safespots, less defence against their attacks and expenses for casting spells. They have -2 flat armour, so weapons such as Dual macuahuitl are recommended to make use of the extra damage. Even then, they are still easily fought with most standard weapons one might have available.
To kill a gargoyle, a rock hammer, a rock thrownhammer, or a granite hammer must be used when they reach 9 or lower Hitpoints. Normally, the item must be used on the gargoyle, but players can buy the "Gargoyle Smasher" perk from Slayer masters for 120 Slayer points, which will automatically smash the gargoyle when it falls to 9 or lower Hitpoints, provided that the player has a rock hammer (or equivalent) in their inventory. The granite hammer will automatically smash gargoyles even without the perk if it is equipped. The rock hammer is faster than the rock thrownhammer as it does not have travel time. If both are in the inventory, the rock hammer is used in melee distance, while thrownhammers are used outside of melee distance.
Gargoyles also have a boss variant, the Grotesque Guardians. In order to access them, the player must kill gargoyles on-task to obtain the brittle key, which unlocks the boss arena. The boss fight consists of two gargoyles; Dusk and Dawn. Players can choose between melee and a melee/range hybrid; the former requires a polearm weapon, while the latter has easier accessibility.
When considering whether to kill regular gargoyles or the Grotesque Guardians, it is worth noting that the normal gargoyles are much faster to kill and require less supplies and effort, whereas the Grotesque Guardians are more time-consuming, and require more effort and supplies to kill. The requirements for killing the Guardians are also substantially higher in terms of stats and gear. The drop table of the Guardians is not significantly better than gargoyles, especially considering that regular gargoyles have very decent drops as well. However, the Guardians are one of only two sources of granite dust, which is untradeable. The dust strengthens steel cannonballs, turning them into granite cannonballs with a max hit of 35 instead of 30.
It is recommended to kill gargoyles in the basement during a task, as there are many gargoyles in a fairly small area compared to the top floor. The basement is also large enough that the player can reset the aggression timer easily without leaving the area.
If killing the Grotesque Guardians, it is strongly recommended the player avoid purchasing Double Trouble, as this causes the boss to be counted as two kills per task rather than one, drastically reducing the amount of kills per task.
Common setups
As gargoyles are weak to crush, many players bring a crush-focused weapon such as the Sarachnis cudgel for this task. Praying Protect from Melee will negate all damage from regular gargoyles. If players have Bigger and Badder unlocked, they may choose to fight marble gargoyles. These superior variants use both melee and ranged attack styles. Be careful, as getting hit by the special attack can be dangerous.
The toxic blowpipe in particular can provide comparable damage to melee setups. It can also envenom them, however this must be done upstairs as the basement gargoyles are immune to venom. Safespots are offered in both locations, but because of the many gargoyles in the area, it is less reliable to do so.
