Special attack

A player performing the crimson kisten's special attack, Brutal Swing.

The crimson kisten has a special attack, Brutal Swing, which consumes 50% of the player's special attack energy. Brutal Swing makes four separate accuracy rolls in a single hit. If at least one roll succeeds, the attack deals 70-110% of the player's maximum hit, with additional successful rolls increasing the attack's minimum and maximum hit by 20%. If the special attack is used against an enemy where the player is guaranteed a successful hit, the attack will act as if all four rolls were successful.

When comparing the kisten to the voidwaker using identical gear (in this case, inquisitor's), the kisten will have a max hit that is slightly below that of the voidwaker. Despite this, the kisten is still superior to the voidwaker in situations where the enemy is weak to crush, as the numerous successful rolls will significantly increase the damage dealt on average, as the kisten's minimum hit is much higher.

The max hit offered from the special will vary depending on the amount of successful rolls made, with each one having their own. For example, a player could max a 67 in best-in-slot crush, Piety and 118 Strength, but then the next special attack deal 70 damage; this is due to the former being three successful rolls while the latter was four rolls.

In practice, the damage scales as follows:

  • 1 successful roll: 70-110%
  • 2 successful rolls: 90-130%
  • 3 successful rolls: 110-150%
  • 4 successful rolls: 130-170%

(Update)
  • The weapon's attack animation has been updated; the original remains for its stab attack style.
  • The weapon is now correctly classified as a spiked weapon instead of an axe.
  • The weapon's special attack now rolls against the target's crush defence rather than their slash defence.

Hotfix

A bug was fixed which caused the crimson kisten to be stronger than intended in PvP scenarios.

Trivia

  • The weapon is named after the kiścień, a type of one-handed medieval flail.
  • The weapon's stab attack animation was originally the standard attack animation across all Combat Options, which was done as an intentional[1] artistic decision to visually distinguish it from the special attack animation, similar to how the dragon claws' standard attack animation is a single claw slash. However, due to player feedback it was changed a week after release, leaving the former animation as the stab attack style instead.
  • The item was initially proposed as the crimson bludgeon, but was renamed after player feedback stated the weapon resembled a flail more than a bludgeon.[2]

"While the current animation was intentional, we agree that using the Special Attack animation as the weapon's standard attack feels like a better fit, so we'll be making that change in next week's update too."

"Many of you pointed out that this weapon looks far more like a flail than a bludgeon, and you were right! Crimson Bludgeon was a development name that we didn’t intend to be final, and we’re now referring to it as the Crimson kisten - named after the medieval Kiścień. While the real-world weapon looks a bit different to our fantasy version, the name fits neatly with some of the historical inspirations we’re drawing from for early Vampyre society."
