The granite maul is a two-handed melee weapon that requires 50 Strength and Attack to wield. They are dropped by gargoyles (75 Slayer required), which are in the Slayer Tower.

Players can use a granite clamp to cosmetically enhance the granite maul. This causes the maul to become untradeable, and the clamp is not returned upon reverting the maul back to its original state.

Players can use an ornate maul handle to enhance the granite maul into a granite maul (ornate handle), which reduces its special attack cost from 60% to 50%.

The granite clamp and ornate handle are obtained from Justine's stuff for the Last Shopper Standing.

Special attack

A player performing the granite maul's special attack, Quick Smash.

The granite maul's special attack, Quick Smash, consumes 60% of the player's special attack energy and deals an instant attack. This is reduced to 50% when using a granite maul (ornate handle).

With the handle added, the special attack can result in two or three hits in a very short amount of time, making it a popular choice for player killing. If the three hits are timed correctly, the granite maul can kill instantly. However, one drawback is that unlike most special attacks, Quick Smash does not increase accuracy.

It is commonly used in the Nightmare Zone in conjunction with the Power surge power-up. Because Quick Smash can be performed rapidly under the effect of Power surge, the granite maul is able to put out more total damage than other special attacks for as long as the power-up is active.

Mechanics

The granite maul's special attack has a homing feature where, for 5 ticks after attacking a target with any weapon, clicking on the special attack bar with the granite maul equipped while next to that target will automatically activate a special attack without having to re-click the target. However, clicking the special attack bar multiple times in one game tick toggles the activation and reactivation of this homing feature. For example, even if the requirement of being next to the target is met, clicking the special attack bar twice in one game tick will not trigger the homing feature to automatically activate a special attack (though this will prepare two special attacks instead, as explained shortly).

Additionally, selecting and deselecting the special attack bar, not necessarily together on the same tick, will prepare two special attacks, assuming neither click of the special attack bar triggers the homing feature. More specifically, when the special attack bar is clicked on to deselect it, a 3 tick window is initiated during which clicking on an opponent (or clicking the special attack bar a third time while next to an opponent one has attacked within 5 ticks, per the homing feature) will cause up to two special attacks to activate depending on available special attack energy. Note that once the special attack bar is deselected and the 3 tick window has begun, if the player wishes to no longer activate the special attack(s) when clicking on the target, they must either unequip the granite maul, switch weapons, or wait out this 3 tick window before clicking on the target.

The game displays a warning when the player initiates combat with a granite maul special attack, calling it wasteful. However, the special attack does not give the player any attack cooldown, regardless of if it was used to initiate combat or not. This means that initiating combat with a granite maul special attack can be quickly followed by another attack on the following tick. This is a useful tactic for dealing high amounts of unexpected damage in PvP scenarios. In terms of long-term damage per second, initiating combat with the special attack is one tick less efficient than using the special attack while on cooldown between normal attack cycles.

Trivia

  • In 2015, a major glitch was discovered involving the granite maul's special attack in combination with trying to perform a logout during combat, known as a fake logout. If done correctly, any entity (monster and player) would be unable to attack the player, effectively making them invincible. This also had additional side effects such as a Pest Control game involving the player who performed the exploit never actually ending. This exploit was most notably used against the Corporeal Beast.
  • Its inventory sprite resembles that of the rock hammer. Prior to the debut of the Grand Exchange, this item's implication in scams was prevalent. Still, it is advisable to exercise caution when dealing with these items in the trade screen.
  • The model for the clamp variant was originally polled as the "hardened granite maul" with its crush attack increased to +95 and crumbling to dust after 1,000 hits. It was first polled without a Defence requirement, and then it was polled with a 50 Defence requirement. Despite failing both polls, it was later added as a cosmetic upgrade.
