The blue moon spear is a non-degradable two-handed bladed staff that requires level 70 Attack and 75 Magic to equip, which is obtained as a possible reward from the Lunar Chest in Neypotzli. It can autocast elemental spells from the standard spellbook, as well as combat spells from the Arceuus spellbook and Ancient Magicks. Despite the name, the blue moon spear is not a spear and not considered a corpbane weapon.

Special attack

A player performing the blue moon spear's special attack, Break Shackles.

The blue moon spear has a special attack, Break Shackles, costing 50% special attack energy and requiring the full blue moon armour set to use.

Break Shackles removes all active binding effects on a target and has a 1.5% increase in accuracy and damage for every tick of binding removed. The damage boost from Break Shackles is capped at a 112.5% increase, while the accuracy boost is not capped.

When the special attack is used while casting movement impairing attack spells, the next activation of the Frostweaver effect will also trigger the special allowing for a 3-hit combo that starts with the spell cast and ends with the melee hit from the Frostweaver effect.

Although the special attack uses the Fend animation, it actually grants Strength experience. When automatically performed, this attack can hit targets across diagonal spaces and over small fences or walls.

Frostweaver

When worn with all of the other pieces of the blue moon armour set, the player gains the Frostweaver set effect. This gives the Blue moon spear a chance to melee attack instantly, without any action delays, after the player casts a spell that would bind, freeze or root a target.

20% chance to occur after successfully casting a Bind spell from the Standard spellbook or an Ice spell from the Ancient spellbook, even if it does not bind a target.
50% chance to occur after successfully casting a Grasp spell from the Arceuus spellbook, even if it does not bind a target.

This attack can be performed automatically by enabling it in the combat options menu.

Strategy

An effective strategy is to autocast Grasp spells from the Arceuus spellbook with Mark of Darkness active. This results in a unique dual-combat style where a player gets one instant and free melee attack for roughly every 2 spells that land. This can be particularly effective in PvP encounters with lots of chasing or on monsters with low melee and magic defences.

30 October 2025 (Update)	Hotfix The damage boost from the special attack is now capped at a 112.5% increase (75 ticks). The accuracy boost from the special attack is now calculated separately from the damage boost, and remains uncapped.
29 October 2025	Hotfix The blue moon spear's special attack no longer deals a disproportionately high amount of damage (up to 200) to NPCs that are internally considered 'bound' to prevent them from moving (e.g. phase 3 Yama, phase 2 Verzik Vitur).
