Dust devils can be assigned as a slayer task by various medium and high-levelled Slayer Masters upon reaching 65 Slayer and 70 combat. In order to obtain these as a Slayer task, the player must have started Desert Treasure I.

Dust devils are an incredibly popular task amongst most slayers, as they have a superior, the choke devil, and are often found in multicombat areas which allows for chinning and burst/barraging. They have relatively decent drops which usually covers the cost of supplies.

Unlike most monsters, dust devils attack with ranged melee; their attacks are considered melee, but they roll on the player's ranged defence rather than melee. They have low defence but are surprisingly accurate for their level.

Players have three options to choose from when slaying dust devils:

  • Catacombs of Kourend - this is the most easily accessible location. Dust devils here have access to the Catacombs of Kourend drop table.
  • Smoke Dungeon - a more remote, quiet location. A multicombat area can be found to the west for on-task purposes.
  • Wilderness Slayer Cave - a somewhat busy location, can only be killed on-task. This location is in level 25-28 Wilderness, so do not bring items you are unwilling to lose. A large amount of costs can be lowered via Blighted ancient ice sacks and the dust devils here have access to the Wilderness Slayer Cave drop table.

Unless killing them as part of Konar quo Maten or Krystilia's Slayer tasks, the Catacombs of Kourend are highly recommended for their ease of accessibility.

Equipment

The occult necklace (+5%), tormented bracelet (+5%), imbued god capes (+2%), and virtus robes (+2% each) or ancestral robes (+3% each) increase the maximum hit of the player's Magic spells. However, the tormented bracelet is generally inefficient to use as the bracelet of slaughter will increase the task's length and maximise overall Slayer experience rates.

It is recommended to use a staff or wand that can autocast Ancient Magicks. Kodai wand provides +15% magic damage bonus as well as infinite water runes and a chance to save runes, making it the most effective.

A goading potion, darts, knives, or a blowpipe may be used to lure. The special attack of the Dinh's bulwark in conjunction with a Lightbearer may also be used to lure, however it may cause stamina issues due to its weight for players with lower agility levels.

A Hunters' crossbow or Hunters' sunlight crossbow is also an effective luring weapon, having the same speed as shortbows and 1 more tile of range. It is also 1-handed, so magic off-hands aren't unequipped. Kebbit bolts and sunlight antler bolts are much more expensive than the cheapest arrows and darts, however Long kebbit bolts are a lower cost alternative.

  1. ^ Two-handed weapon.
