At level 85 Slayer and Combat level, the player may be assigned Abyssal demons by mid and high levelled Slayer Masters and Krystilia. They can be found in the Abyssal Area, the Catacombs of Kourend, the Wilderness Slayer Cave, and in the Slayer Tower, where they are found on the third floor and in the task-only basement.

Abyssal demons use a fairly accurate melee stab attack, but with a relatively low max hit of 8. With Bigger and badder unlocked, the Greater abyssal demon has a chance to spawn as a Superior slayer monster. The greater abyssal demon is much more powerful and accurate with a max hit of 27. Protect from Melee will neutralise all damage taken from either variation.

Players on abyssal demon tasks may also opt to kill the Abyssal Sire boss instead, which can be very profitable as compensation for significantly lower experience rates compared to Abyssal demons.

Abyssal demons have a unique mechanic in which they frequently teleport around the area they're being attacked in. They also have a high chance to teleport the player up to 20 tiles away. It is highly recommended to acquire and read a Teleport anchoring scroll before fighting Abyssal demons for the first time, as this will eliminate the chance for the player to be teleported. If the player doesn't have access to the anchoring scroll, it is recommended to enable Auto Retaliate to continue attacking after being teleported. The greater abyssal demon also teleports around the player, and afterward will always land a successful hit if its attack is not prayed against.

Abyssal demons are Demons, meaning they are subject to the various accuracy and damage bonuses of Demonbane Weaponry including Arclight, Emberlight, the Scorching bow, and Demonbane spells, although generally, these are not used in favour of damage dealt through area of effect damage.

Because they potentially offer high rates of Slayer experience, players should extend Abyssal demons as soon as possible.

The drop table for Abyssal demons is generally unremarkable with a few exceptions. They drop the Abyssal whip at a 1/512 rate, and therefore will drop an average of one whip every other extended task. They are also one of the only sources of the Abyssal dagger, but this is an extremely rare drop. Ensouled abyssal heads will appear several times in a task, making a Soul bearer useful. The Herb sack will also allow the player to profit further, and an Explorer's ring 4 may be used for the few alchable items among their drops. Abyssal demons in the Catacombs of Kourend also have access to that location's drop table which includes pieces of the Dark totem. Greater abyssal demons in the Catacombs will always drop a piece of the Dark totem.

Strategy

The Wilderness Slayer Cave is the only location in which a Cannon can be used against Abyssal demons, although as part of the Wilderness, it is also a Player killing hotspot. The Wilderness Slayer Cave also allows taking advantage of cheaper Blighted supplies and the passive effects of the Accursed sceptre (a) and other weapons charged with Revenant ether.

With their 1x1 size, Abyssal demons are ideal for use with area of effect weapons including the Venator bow and Ancient Magicks. The Catacombs and Wilderness Slayer Cave are the only two Multicombat areas with Abyssal demons. As Abyssal demons are not aggressive, a method to cause them to attack the player, such as Dinh's bulwark or a Goading potion, is recommended.

Because of the teleportation mechanic, Smoke Barrage or Smoke Burst are favoured over their Ice equivalents. After teleporting away, frozen abyssal demons will not move back toward the player until they're unfrozen. Blood spells are significantly more expensive than Smoke and are not recommended.

Killing Abyssal demons outside multicombat areas, usually done only on a Konar task, will result in a slower task requiring more attention. If required to kill Abyssal demons in a single combat zone, it's recommended to use an Expeditious bracelet with a melee setup.

If the player is comfortable with the risk, Abyssal demons in the Wilderness Slayer Cave will provide some of the best rates of Slayer experience in the game. Abyssal demons in the Catacombs are still an outstanding source of experience.

Equipment

This is the recommended equipment for barraging or bursting abyssal demons in the Catacombs of Kourend.

Abyssal demons in the Catacombs are excellent experience due to the AoE effect of ancients; The chambers contain plenty of spawns that can be grouped together for barraging or bursting, making them highly suited for multitarget strategies. This means they're some of the highest slayer experience in the game, and therefore the bracelet of slaughter is preferable over a tormented bracelet or confliction gauntlet as it will increase task length. This is especially true for player looking to train their slayer and magic levels.

Because abyssal demons have low magic defence, magic damage and prayer bonus should be prioritised over magic accuracy. Magic attack bonuses are far less important than damage multipliers.

Items that increase magic damage are especially valuable when bursting or barraging abyssal demons. Kodai wand provides +15% magic damage bonus as well as infinite water runes and a chance to save runes, making it the most effective weapon used here.

The Elidinis' ward (f) is the best off-hand, offering a +5% Magic damage bonus, significantly increasing damage output. The occult necklace also provides +5% Magic damage and is a staple choice, while the tormented bracelet offers further magic damage, though this should be swapped for a bracelet of slaughter to extend the task. Other useful pieces include the Virtus robes which are optimal for casting ancient magicks. Another strong choice for gear is the ancestral robes, imbued god capes and magus ring, all of which contribute to significantly higher kill speed and experience rates.

As it's a slayer task, the slayer helmet (i) should be used.

  1. ^ Mage's book is only better if it increases max hit, otherwise Book of darkness is better for Prayer bonus
  2. ^ Avernic treads are only better if they increase max hit, otherwise Devout boots are better for Prayer bonus

Dinh's bulwark’s special attack, especially when paired with the Lightbearer, is one way the player can gain aggression. Alternatively, fast weapons such as darts, knives, shortbows, or a toxic blowpipe can be used. Ideally, the player will use goading potion as this is ideal for drawing aggression.

The added weight from Dinh's may require the use of stamina potions or an explorer's ring to maintain run energy.

Reading a teleport anchoring scroll is highly recommended to prevent demons from teleporting the player.

A common method to kill abyssal demons here is to tag all the demons in one chamber, lure them into the corridor, freeze them, then repeat the process with the other chamber to combine all nine into a single stack. After this, use barrage spells like smoke barrage, ice barrage, or your best available AoE spell. Ice spells can be used effectively with a teleport anchoring scroll. After stacking demons in the corridor, players can stand to the east or west of the pile and continuously target one on the original tile. This prevents them from teleporting outside of the spell’s radius.

An extended antifire potion is recommended, as the quickest route to the abyssal demons passes through aggressive iron dragons that deal heavy damage with fire breath. Players can also take a slightly longer but safer path through the bloodveld, nechryael, and greater demon chambers, if they did not bring an antifire potion.

A herb sack may be useful, as abyssal demons drop a steady supply of herbs.

With the venator bow, ranging abyssal demons becomes a viable alternative to barraging them. While it is less efficient, it also requires much less effort as the bow will often tag new abyssal demons without the player's input. With 90 Magic and completion of A Kingdom Divided (and Dragon Slayer II for Ironman wrath rune access), they can provide strong Prayer training. Using Master Reanimation on ensouled heads and Demonic Offering on ashes yields ~307 Prayer experience per kill, over double their Slayer experience, without leaving the area.

Abyssal demons can be killed in the Wilderness slayer cave. This area is multicombat and allows use of a dwarf multicannon, but as with all Wilderness activities, players should avoid risking items they aren't willing to lose.
It can, however, greatly speed up the task and provide a consistent supply of aggression.

The cannon will not be lost if you die while it is placed on the ground. A one-click teleport (such as a royal seed pod) is strongly recommended in case of player killers.

The accursed sceptre (a) is notable here, as it provides a 50% boost to both Magic accuracy and damage against any NPC in the Wilderness, making it a powerful option. This effect stacks with the slayer helmet (i). Players should 3-item, or 4-item if using Protect Item, keeping only their sceptre and a few key magic strength pieces as their core items that are kept on death. The rest of the setup can consist of inexpensive equipment, such as monk's robes, bracelet of slaughter, and free items like the completed book of darkness.

Blighted supplies are recommended for food and prayer restoration as well as blighted ice sacks. This is because they are inexpensive and top tier, but can only be used in the wilderness.

Because abyssal demons have low magic defence, magic damage and prayer bonus should be prioritised over magic accuracy. Magic attack bonuses are far less important than damage multipliers and prayer.

It is strongly recommended to use goading potions or a cannon to gain aggression instead of a Dinh's bulwark or ranged weapons, as autocast settings are cleared when changing weapons inside the Wilderness.

Core items:

It is advised to stand as far south as possible within the section of the cave, since much of the northern area lies above level 30 Wilderness where teleports cannot be used.

Other items:

Tips:

  • The Wilderness player alarm plugin on RuneLite can alert the player when an enemy is nearby, enabling a quick response due to forced awareness. This can greatly reduce the chance of getting teleblocked before teleporting.

Meleeing abyssal demons offers good experience and easily allows the player access to the Arceuus spellbook for offering spells, thralls, and death charge. If in the Slayer tower bonus experience will also be awarded, scaling with completion of the Morytania Diary.

Use of demonbane weaponry like Arclight or Emberlight is strongly recommended for highest damage output.

  1. ^ May be better than obsidian tier tasset options if no max hit is gained
  2. ^ Only worth using on several abyssal demons in multicombat areas
