The Avernic defender is a defender wielded in the shield slot, requiring 70 Attack and Defence to wield. It is obtained by combining a dragon defender with an Avernic defender hilt. This process can be reversed to return the dragon defender, but the hilt will be destroyed in the process. This defender boasts the highest strength bonus of any shield slot equipment, being 1 higher than the dragonfire shield. It also has the highest melee attack bonuses of any shield slot equipment. The defensive bonuses are comparable to that of an adamant kiteshield.

Ghommal's hilt 5 or 6 can be attached to it, creating Ghommal's avernic defender 5 or 6 respectively, giving the bonuses of the Avernic defender and the additional benefits of the hilt. This process is reversible, returning both the hilt and the defender.

Avernic weaponry was common amongst Zarosian forces in the Second Age, crafted by Avernic demon smiths in the liquid fires of Infernus. Today, they are incredibly rare, and Verzik Vitur's Avernic defender is one of the few to remain, a relic from her time in the service of Zaros. Due to its age, the full defender has been destroyed, and only the hilt remains.^[1]

If the player dies to a PvP death and the avernic defender is not one of the player's protected items, it will remain in the player's inventory, but will become broken, which means the item is unusable and must be repaired with 600,000 coins by using the item on Perdu. The game values the defender at 600,000 GP when determining which items to protect.

The Dragon defender is the item Falo requires players to show him when he sings about: A sword held in the other hand, red its colour, Cyclops strength you must withstand. This upgraded version is also accepted.

• The term Avernic refers to a race of demons, which are composed of the Tsutsaroth (demons such as K'ril Tsutsaroth and Porazdir), Alyaroth (greater demons and black demons) and Byzroth (lesser demons) tribes.
  • In Old School RuneScape, Thammaron is the only demon directly confirmed to be Avernic.^[2]
