Kalphite Queen/Strategies
This copy was last processed on . The copied wiki revision is dated .
The Kalphite Queen is a boss located in the Kharidian Desert. She is stronger than her combat level suggests due to her damage output ability.
If using the non-instanced version of the Kalphite Lair, players may fill a looting bag and their inventory with supplies and die within the lair, leaving a pile of supplies on the ground for 60 minutes which allows much longer trips.

86 for the shortcut after the Elite Desert diary
Transportation
The Kalphite Queen is located at the end of the Kalphite Lair. It is highly advised to complete both the Elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary and at minimum, the Hard Desert Diary. The former avoids the need to bring a dramen or lunar staff, as the lair is very close to the BIQ ring. The latter avoids the need to continually bring ropes (though two will be needed to set the ropes in place). While the Elite Desert Diary unlocks a shortcut that is usable at 86 Agility, one of the tasks needed requires the player to speak to a mounted head inside their player-owned house, which essentially locks the shortcut until the kq head is obtained. Once the Elite Desert Diary is completed however, the shortcut becomes usable with the appropriate Agility level, which is essentially required for long-term farming, especially for those seeking the kalphite princess.
From the surface area, players go west of the Shantay Pass until they find a bulging tunnel; this is where a rope is needed for players. From the dungeon area, walk south through the tunnel to reach the lair; another rope is needed here.
Once in the lair, players will go around a fairly large tunnel section with hostile soldiers, which can poison if they damage you. At the end is a chamber with two Kalphite guardians and another bulging tunnel; this is where the other rope is used. Like the soldiers, the guardians can poison, so being under the effects of an anti-poison potion is recommended so the player does not get hit with poison while fighting the Queen.
After going down, there is another set of guardians. On the other side is the Queen; drink potions and put on protection prayers before charging in.
The fight
Tip: Unless wearing a serpentine helm for the duration of the fight, either sip an antidote++ before going to the lair to save an inventory slot, or bring the potion in with you during the fight.
The Kalphite Queen has 510 Hitpoints, split across two phases. Her Magic and Ranged attacks will always land as successful hits. While unlikely, it is possible for them to land but deal no damage. Her Ranged attack will drain 1 prayer point if it rolls more than 0 damage, even if the player prevents the damage with Protect from Missiles. Her Melee attack does not share the unique accuracy mechanic, and is treated as a standard attack meaning that standing next to her will decrease her DPS. Unlike the soldiers and guardians, this melee attack does not poison. When standing in melee range of the Kalphite Queen, she has a 1/2 chance of doing a melee attack, while her Magic and Ranged attacks each have a 1/4 chance of triggering.[1]
There are two phases of the fight, similar to Vet'ion. While in her grounded form, the Kalphite Queen has Protect from Magic and Protect from Missiles active; however, they only add increased Defence to those styles rather than full immunity like the player versions of them.
When her first form falls at zero health, her chitin will crack open to reveal her second form, a wasp-like creature. This airborne form has Protect from Melee active; however, like the first form, this only provides increased Defence.
Note: Upon triggering the second form, there is a time limit of 20 minutes for defeating it. If not defeated within this time frame, the Kalphite Queen returns to the first form, though she carries the health she had left in her second form upon reverting back.
Her ranged attack will hit players close to the main target. To avoid this, players in a group can stand on opposite sides of her. This positioning (combined with Protect from Magic) will greatly reduce the amount of damage taken over the course of the fight.
Throughout the fight, if the Kalphite Queen is near any of the bulging cocoons, there is a 1/20 chance it will hatch an aggressive Kalphite Worker each time the Queen is hit (including on unsuccessful hits).[2][3] These only stay for a while before despawning. It is advised to get the Queen near them so the workers will spawn. This is because if there are plenty of workers around her, she will be unable to move at all while they are present, and allow the player to easily flinch her for longer trips. This is only viable with melee, since melee attacks land instantly, while Ranged or Magic projectiles do not land quickly enough to flinch the boss. An exception to this are salamanders, which work like a melee weapon and can deal magic damage.
Her attacks can be tick-eaten, however her ranged and magic attacks do have different projectile speeds and as such, it is advised to always make sure to heal up when below 31 Hitpoints to prevent the risk of dying. It is recommended to step under her during this to not take more damage.
Equipment
- A Dragon warhammer or Elder maul is important for lowering Kalphite Queen's defence if using melee and ranged, making both forms much faster to kill.
- The Ring of suffering (ri) is useful here due to Kalphite Queen constantly hitting you for high damage, triggering the recoil effect. Alternatively, the Lightbearer can give additional follow up special attacks if you are not resetting every kill. Both are generally better than strength rings, as extra defence reduction and recoiled damage add up over both phases.
- It is still recommended to occasionally flinch the boss when you have to eat or if your supplies are low towards the end of a kill. Step under the boss to limit the amount of times that the Kalphite Queen can hit. This can be further optimised by using a fast weapon, (such as a blowpipe), followed by a slower heavy hitting weapon, (such as a crossbow) each time you step out from underneath KQ before returning underneath. You are effectively doing 7 cycles of damage vs. the Queen's 4, and will significantly reduce the amount of damage you take throughout the fight.
- An Anglerfish can be eaten before banking for the fight to boost hitpoints for a slight advantage.
- Using a Slayer Helm (i) while on task provides a far greater bonus to DPS than any other piece of gear. If you are struggling, do Slayer tasks until you receive a kalphite task. This will massively improve your chances of success.

Despite her appearing to use a special version of Protect from Magic/Missiles, it is just to show off her increased Magic/Ranged defensive stats. With a Tumeken's shadow, players can opt to save inventory space for longer trips between banking or bring additional gear.
If the player does not have access to Tumeken's shadow or Eye of ayak, magic can be used for phase 1 as well, but magic weapons benefit from many gear switches and do not perform as well as most ranged weapons.

First phase
During both phases, it generally does not matter whether you pray Protect from Magic or Protect from Missiles, but Protect from Magic is still preferred in case another player crashes you as it can bounce between players. Also, Piety (or Mystic Vigour/Augury for magic) is strongly recommended to speed up kills. Immediately run under her again after killing off her first phase, heal up, and prepare for the second phase.
Second phase
Players should continue to pray Protect from Magic during phase 2. Players should walk under her as soon as this phase begins, otherwise she will get an extra attack on you first. Use a DPS calculator to determine how accurate her melee attacks during this phase will be; stand within melee range if more than 50% of her melee attacks will miss on average.[n 1]
Flinching the Kalphite Queen is a slower method than conventional methods, however it requires much fewer resources per kill, allowing even low level players to do extended trips of 5 or more kills. This method is more easily employed by ironman players, as due to the Kalphite Queen's lair being instanced, they can leave and re-enter the instance to reset all the spawns, making it much quicker to set things up again. Due to the slow nature of flinching, it is highly recommended to have a Kalphite Slayer task, as the Slayer helmet can give very large bonuses. Verac the Defiled's equipment can hit through the Queen's high defences on both phases incredibly well even without a slayer task. Otherwise, the Zombie axe or Keris partisan of breaching have the highest expected hits for both phases.

For phase 2, Salamanders can be used to flinch with Magic as other magic weapons and spells have travel time and cannot be used. They can be brought for phase 2 along with gear for phase 1 if inventory space allows.

Setting up
Make sure you have around 70% run energy before you head into the lair. You'll need to do some running to attract the Kalphite Guardians and the Kalphite Queen, and running out of run energy can force you to tank more hits from the Queen herself. Since you probably don't have the elite Desert Diary done, you'll have to take the long way around - walking this part helps conserve run energy.
It is advisable to watch a video on the below method on setting up the Kalphite Queen, such as this one.
Turn on Protect from Melee as you go into the lair and attract the two Kalphite Guardians near the entrance. Run back to the entrance rope and stand two tiles to the south of it - this should cause the two Guardians to stand one behind the other in a line. With this done, turn on Protect from Missiles and find the Kalphite Queen to attract her attention (do not attack the Kalphite Queen if using a bone dagger as your special weapon), then run back to the entrance and stand two tiles west and one tile north of the entrance rope. If done correctly, the two Kalphite Guardians and the Kalphite Queen will be stood in a line facing you, with the Kalphite Queen out of attack range. If the Kalphite Queen gets stuck on the cocoon in the middle after attracting her attention, walk diagonally south-west 2 tiles and then back to release her.
With the Guardians and the queen in a line, turn on Protect from Missiles then run 3 tiles south of the Kalphite's Queen south-western tile, then immediately run under her. The Guardians should now position themselves to trap the queen against the cocoon in the middle, and she is unable to move to attack to you while stood under her.
Flinching
With the Kalphite Queen stuck, all you have to do is flinch the Kalphite Queen with your melee weapon until she is dead. It is highly recommended to summon thralls, as they will significantly increase kill speed, as they will be able to do damage while you are waiting for your next attack.
Due to the Kalphite Queen's attack speed, you can attack once every 10 ticks without her retaliating against you.
After the kill
After the kill, the flinching safespot will need to be set up again.
If playing as an ironman, simply leave the lair and re-enter, as this will reset the instance to a fresh state.
If playing on a standard account, the Kalphite workers which spawned during the fight will need to be defeated before trying to set up the flinching safespot again, or you may choose to hop worlds to look for a fresh lair.Inventory Setups
Pre-Elite Desert Diary
Players may need to complete up to 256 killcount before receiving the kq head or tattered kq head to complete the Elite Desert Diary and unlock the shortcut at 86 Agility. Until then, it is generally better to maximise kills per trip by minimising extra switches and/or flinching the boss.
Post-Elite Desert Diary
With the desert elite diary completed, it becomes much more beneficial to focus on high damage output as it is quick to return to the lair after restoring stats at your POH with the agility shortcut. This method capitalises on maximum Melee and Ranged/Magic attack bonuses, and every kill will start with full health, prayer, and special attack.
Having a Kalphite Slayer task to use the Slayer helmet is strongly recommended for saving an inventory space and significantly boosting damage.
With the recoil enabled, ring of suffering (ri) deals a lot of damage due to the frequency and severity of the Queen's attacks. An ultor ring with a scythe or partisan of breaching are an exception due to their unique damage scaling, but the suffering provides extra damage during both phases and when not using melee. If you take too much damage, step under the boss to heal. Otherwise, heal during the phase transition.
