The rune crossbow is a crossbow that is stronger than the adamant crossbow but weaker than the dragon crossbow. It requires a Ranged level of 61 to wield, and can fire up to and including runite bolts. It is one-handed so it can be equipped alongside a shield, such as an anti-dragon shield or god book. It has an attack range of 7 increased to 9 with longrange.

Rune crossbows can be made through the Fletching skill at level 69; a player must first cut a yew stock for the crossbow from yew logs, granting 50 Fletching experience. Then, a player must add runite limbs to the stock with a hammer in their inventory, granting 100 experience and making an unstrung rune crossbow. Finally, a player must string the crossbow with a crossbow string, granting 50 experience. Creating a rune crossbow from raw materials grants 200 Fletching experience in total, and doing so within Witchaven and/or Yanille is a task for the elite Ardougne Diary.

Ironmen may obtain a rune crossbow by defeating the crazy archaeologist. The rune crossbow is commonly used among ironmen and low-level players for Slayer tasks, and for TzHaar Fight Cave, due to the ease of obtaining broad bolts and the ability to equip a shield. For Slayer tasks, a magic shortbow with rune or amethyst arrows is often a stronger weapon.

The rune crossbow is commonly used even for high-level content due to its ability to fire ruby and diamond bolts. The dragon, Armadyl, Zaryte, and dragon hunter crossbows are stronger alternatives.

Using a Shattered relics variety ornament kit on the crossbow will change its appearance into that of an rune crossbow (or).

  • One of the fastest crossbows, together with the hunters' crossbow.
  • Can only fire bolt racks, which cannot be retrieved by an Ava's device.
  • If worn with the rest of Karil the Tainted's equipment, it offers a set effect which lowers the target's Agility level (only works on players).
  • Wearing an amulet of the damned together with the whole equipment set grants a 25% chance for an attack to hit twice, in which case the second hit will inflict half the damage of the first.
  • Like all Barrows equipment, it degrades and will fully degrade after 15 hours of combat. It is repairable.
Hunters' sunlight crossbow Ranged 66

  • It is also easier to obtain for Ironmen, requiring Fletching 74 Fletching to make. However, Ironmen can only obtain the ammunition via Hunter.
  • Uses Sunlight antler bolts or Moonlight antler bolts as ammunition, giving +55 and +60 ranged strength which are equivalent to Amethyst arrows and Dragon arrows, respectively.

  • Weaker accuracy than the rune crossbow but the fast firing makes it good budget DPS.

  • Can be imbued with a magic shortbow scroll, increasing its ranged attack bonus to +75 and lowering the special attack cost to 50%.
  • Can fire up to amethyst arrows.
