Shipbuilding is a feature in Sailing where players can customise a boat with different types of components and facilities. It is performed at the Shipyard.
Ships
Upon completing the Pandemonium quest, players unlock the raft. Each upgrade requires a certain Sailing and Construction level which can be boosted, including using the crystal saw. Additional ships can be purchased from shipwrights, provided the required Sailing level is met.
The raft includes a customisable hull, steering, mast and sails, along with one facility hotspot and a two-player capacity. At level 15 Sailing, players can unlock the skiff. A skiff includes a customisable keel, hull, mast and sails, and steering, along with four facility hotspots and capacity for two crewmates and five players. At level 50 Sailing, players can unlock the sloop, which features eight facility hotspots and has capacity for five crewmates and ten players.
Core boat parts
Each boat comes with a set of core boat parts, starting with the lowest level. Core boat parts can be changed by using the boat schematics board. These parts affect the boat's stats and performance and are:
- The hull, which affects the ship's hitpoints and speed.
- The helm, with higher tier helms giving the ship more resistance to rapids.
- The mast and sails, which make the ship accelerate faster and increase the duration of speed boosts from wind.
- The keel, which gives the ship more health and armour. Note: the raft does not have a keel and cannot be equipped with one.
- The eternal brazier, which enables the player to safely traverse the icy seas in the Northern Ocean.
Flags, trims and sail patterns are also considered core boat parts, but are purely cosmetic.
Facilities
Players can customise their ship, depending on the type of ship and their Sailing and Construction level. Players can build facilities such as cargo holds, cannons, salvaging hooks, trawling nets, and other types of stations as long as they have a hammer, a saw, and the required materials in their inventory.
Shipwright assistance
If the player has the required Sailing level, but does not have the required Construction level, a shipwright can be paid a fee to construct some core boat parts and facilities, up to and including mahogany and mithril. The parts and facilities that the shipwright can build are:
Ship hazards
Sailing hazards are dangerous effects that can be encountered in the ocean while Sailing. When completing a sea charting task, if there are hazards in the area the task will give a warning about them. If the player enters a hazardous area without adequate protection, any crewmembers operating ship facilities will "panic", cancelling their current orders and will not respond to the player's commands until the ship is out of the hazard zone. Additionally, the player's ship is significantly slowed. Some hazards can be prevented or mitigated through having better equipment on the player's ship.
Multiple boats
At level 15, 50, 78, and 91, players unlock the ability to have additional boats, up to 2, 3, 4, and 5 respectively. This allows players to have multiple boats suited for different purposes at sea.
The suggested arrangements listed below are suitable for high-level players. Because many components have a linear upgrade progression, lower-level players or ironmen can downgrade any chosen component to suit their needs and abilities.
A high-level salvaging sloop build consists of at least:
- Highest level cargo hold (rosewood or ironwood)
- Two salvaging hooks (dragon or rune)
- One salvaging station
- A crystal extractor for additional experience, preferably placed opposite the cargo hold and salvaging station. This placement allows access both when salvaging, and when sorting salvage.
- Two kegs filled with:
- Horizon's lure for 2.5% extra experience
- Whirlpool surprise for an invisible +2 Sailing boost when manually salvaging
- An adamant keel to access Barracuda salvage in crystal-flecked waters. Salvaging in these waters will boost the amount of crystal shards extracted by the crystal extractor
- An adamant helm to access mercenary shipwrecks and merchant shipwrecks in the Southern Expanse
- An eternal brazier to access Fremennik shipwrecks and merchant shipwrecks in the Northern Ocean
- Several optional upgrades to improve trips from and to salvaging spots:
- A wind catcher for holding/storing wind motes
- A camphor or rosewood hull (an ironwood hull does not provide additional speed so is not necessary for salvaging)
- An ironwood mast and cotton sails for longer speed boost duration
- A keg filled with Kraken ink stout for more frequent ocean encounters.
- Crew: Cabin Boy Jenkins and Jolly Jim for their deckhandiness
A high-level deep sea trawling-focused sloop setup may consist of the following:
- Best available hull for speed and survivability. Some shoals such as marlin shoals require a rosewood hull to always keep up with it.
- Best available mast and sails for additional speed boost duration. Upgrades above the camphor mast and canvas sails are less important than the hull, because this only slightly affects the speed boost duration.
- Moderate to best available keel for additional survivability (there are no shoals in crystal-flecked waters, so adamant keel or better is not a hard requirement). Some shoals come to a rest near aggressive monsters, so additional damage resistance is very helpful.
- An adamant helm or better for trawling in tangled kelp regions, or a rune helm to utilize powerful rapids
- An eternal brazier for trawling in the Northern Ocean
- Best available cargo hold for maximum storage
- A keg filled with Trawler's trust for an extra 5% catch rate while trawling
- Optionally, kegs with Horizon's lure and Kraken ink stout can be added to slightly boost Sailing experience, and increase the number of ocean encounters.
- Two of the best available trawling nets. The port side (left) one is for the crewmember, the starboard side (right) one is for the player. This is to allow the player to open the cargo hold with a single click (which is blocked while operating the port side trawling net).
- Optionally, a fathom stone, or the superior fathom pearl if available. Because shoals follow a consistent pattern, this can also be left off the boat, which will only affect the time to initially find the shoal.
- An advanced chum station, or the superior chum spreader
- A crystal extractor next to one of the trawling nets and diagonally opposite the cargo hold for additional Sailing experience while trawling
- A gale catcher (or wind catcher) to gain speed boosts while chasing shoals
- Crew: Cabin Boy Jenkins and/or Jolly Jim at the nets, and either Spotter Virginia or Sailor Jakob on helm.
A suggested combat-focused build on a boat may consist of the following:
- One or two of your best available cannons
- The best available keel for decreased damage from monsters
- The best available hull for improved defence against monsters
- A decent cargo hold for storing repair kits
- A Keg filled with Perildance bitter to boost the cannons' maximum hit by +1.
- Optionally, a keg with Horizon's lure or Kraken ink stout can be added to slightly boost Sailing experience, or increase the number of ocean encounters.
- An eternal brazier to be able to access the Northern Ocean, where narwhals and vampyre krakens can be found
- Bosun's workbench, for automatic boat repairs
- Optionally, a crystal extractor for additional sailing experience and Crystal shards.
- Optionally, a skilling facility (salvaging hook or trawling net) for use when not in combat.
- Crew: Oarswoman Olga and Jittery Jim to man your best available cannons, and have Cabin Boy Jenkins or Jolly Jim to repair the boat. Shoot monsters using your best ranged or magic weapon while leaving the two cannons to crewmates.
When desired, significant cost can be saved on having multiple boats, by creating a boat layout that serves multiple different purposes. Because salvaging has fewer facilities and keg options, it can be easier to combine with combat than trawling. Such a build would use the following:
- The best possible keel for additional survivability
- The best possible hull for survivability and speed
- A camphor mast and canvas sails or better, for improved speed boosts
- The best available cargo hold to store salvage
- An eternal brazier to access vampyre krakens, Fremennik shipwrecks, and merchant shipwrecks in the Northern Ocean
- An adamant keel to access Barracuda salvage in crystal-flecked waters. Salvaging in these waters will boost the amount of crystal shards extracted by the crystal extractor
- An adamant helm or better to access mercenary shipwrecks and merchant shipwrecks in the Southern Expanse
- Two salvaging hooks (dragon or rune)
- A crystal extractor beside the port side salvaging hook (the side with the cargo hold, for use while salvaging)
- A salvaging station on the starboard side, across from the crystal extractor
- Two of the best available cannons
- A gale catcher or wind catcher
- A Ballistic attractor
- Two kegs filled with Perildance bitter and Horizon's lure.
- The final slot can be filled with either of the following:
- A keg filled with Whirlpool surprise for an invisible +2 Sailing boost when manually salvaging
- A teleport focus for easier/cheaper transportation around the world
- Crew: Choose either Oarswoman Olga and Jittery Jim (combat), or Cabin Boy Jenkins and Jolly Jim (salvaging), plus either Spotter Virginia or Sailor Jakob on the helm. Additionally, have either Cabin Boy Jenkins or Jolly Jim do the repairs if the boat gets damaged.
When desired, significant cost can be saved on having multiple boats, by creating a boat layout that serves multiple different purposes. To combine trawling and combat, some optional facilities (such as kegs and the fathom pearl) may need to be removed. Such a build would use the following:
- The best possible keel for additional survivability
- The best possible hull for survivability and speed
- A camphor mast and canvas sails or better, for improved speed boosts
- The best available cargo hold to store trawled fish
- An eternal brazier to access marlin shoals and vampyre krakens
- An adamant helm or better for trawling in tangled kelp regions, or a rune helm to utilize powerful rapids
- Two cotton trawling nets. The port side (left) one is for the crewmember, the starboard side (right) one is for the player. This is to allow the player to open the cargo hold with a single click (which is blocked while operating the port side trawling net).
- A chum spreader or advanced chum station
- A crystal extractor diagonally opposite the cargo hold and next to one of the trawling nets, for use while trawling
- Two of the best available cannons
- A gale catcher or wind catcher
- A Ballistic attractor
- A keg filled with Perildance bitter or Trawler's trust, to boost both trawling and combat. Replace the contents whenever switching activities.
- A teleport focus for easier/cheaper transportation around the world
- The final slot (and/or one of the two kegs) can be filled with either of the following:
- A fathom pearl or fathom stone for easier locating of shoals
- A second keg with the other type of beer, for easier switching between activities.
- Crew: Choose either Oarswoman Olga and Jittery Jim (combat), or Cabin Boy Jenkins and Jolly Jim (trawling), plus either Spotter Virginia or Sailor Jakob on the helm. Additionally, have either Cabin Boy Jenkins or Jolly Jim do the repairs if the boat gets damaged.
While doing courier tasks, the type of boat used does not limit the number of crewmembers that can help carry cargo to and from ports. Because of this, the more manoeuvrable skiff is preferred over sloops when doing courier tasks, to be able to squeeze through tighter gaps to use rapids. This can be combined very well with the Barracuda trial skiff. This type of setup consists of the following:
- Best available hull for speed
- Best available mast and sails for acceleration and speed boost duration
- Best available helm to utilize rapids
- At least an Adamant keel to access Crystal-flecked waters for the elven ports and The Gwenith Glide
- An innoculation[sic] station for Backwater fetid waters resistance at The Jubbly Jive
- A gale catcher (or wind catcher) for releasing wind motes
- A keg filled with horizon's lure for additional experience.
- If horizon's lure is not unlocked, fill it with kraken ink stout instead for more frequent Ocean encounters (including strong winds for speed boosts).
- A Crystal extractor, placed directly next to the helm to be able to use it while manning the helm, during trials.
- Crew: Cabin Boy Jenkins, Jolly Jim, Jobless Jim, Ex-Captain Siad. These four will each be able to carry 2 crates from and to the dock. If a fifth crewmate is available, Sailor Jakob can optionally man the helm, but otherwise there is no difference between the options for the fifth crew slot. If a helmsman is desired, they should be assigned to either the first or second crew slot to appear on the skiff.
Stats
| Stat | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Base speed | The fastest speed the boat will go without any boosts. |
| Speed cap | The fastest speed the boat can reach by gaining bursts of speed, ignoring speed gained from wind boosts. Bursts of speed are granted by crossing over rapids, crossing over crystal motes with at least one space open in a wind catcher, breaking ice away from the hull, and entering one of the elven portals on the Gwenith Glide course.
Each burst of speed gives +0.5 speed. The bursts of speed can be stacked up to the hull's speed cap: for example, the wooden and oak raft hulls can stack two bursts of speed to gain +1.0 speed, while the rest of the raft hulls will cap at one stack, giving +0.5 speed. Whenever a new burst of speed is applied, one stack is gained, up to 5 stacks, and the boost timer resets to 15 ticks. If these 15 ticks expire, one stack will decay every 4 ticks, until all of the stacks are depleted, removing the boost, or another burst of speed is gained, resetting the timer. When bursts of speed are combined with wind boosts, boats can reach a speed equal to 0.5 over their listed speed cap. |
| Acceleration | The amount the boat's speed will increase per tick when the double forwards arrow is selected. The speed can only increase up to the boat's base speed, before any bursts of speed or wind boosts are applied.
To get the true acceleration of your boat, divide its Acceleration bonus by 128 and add 0.5. Currently, ships can only have an acceleration of 0.5 or 1.0. |
| Speed boost duration | The time in ticks a wind boost will last for. A wind boost grants +0.5 speed when moving forwards and ignores the boat's speed cap. |
| Armour | For every 100 armour a boat has, it gains one flat armour, decreasing damage from all sources by 1. |
