Rapids are fast and turbulent circular vortices of water found while Sailing. There are several kinds of rapids, and as the rapids increase in intensity, the tier of helm required to use them increases. Having too low tier of a helm will result in your boat taking damage, whilst having the required tier or higher will result in your boat getting a speed boost.

Your boat's rapid resistance can be found from stats panel in the sailing options represented as a number.

Rapid type Minimum helm Notes
Gentle rapids Iron helm More common near coastlines and in low-level oceans
Strong rapids Mithril helm More common in open oceans, found throughout The Jubbly Jive
Powerful rapids Rune helm Limited to high-level oceans, currently found only in the Weiss Melt
Deadly rapids Dragon helm Currently unused

Mechanics

When passing through the rapids, you will receive a rapids stack and a 15 tick debuff timer is set. If you pass through another set of rapids before this timer expires, it will have its duration renewed and a rapids stack is added, up to a cap of 15. Each stack adds 0.5 tiles/tick to your speed, up until the speed cap. But if currently not boosted, strong rapids add 2 stacks and powerful rapids add 3 stacks. Wind boost is separate from rapids boosts, allowing you to go up to .5 tiles/tick faster than your boats max speed. After 15 ticks have passed since you last passed through rapids, your rapids stacks will go down by 2 every 4 ticks until they are all gone or you reset the debuff timer by going through another rapids. Note that with lower tier sails, your acceleration and deceleration will be capped at 0.5 tiles/tick
