Marlin shoals are a type of fish shoal found out at sea. They can be fished for raw marlin via deep sea trawling, requiring level 91 Fishing and granting 265.5 experience per successful catch with a trawling net, or 53.1 if caught with a fishing rod.
Unlike coastal fishing spots, players must use a boat to reach fish shoals and operate a trawling net within range of it, whilst matching the depth the shoal is currently swimming in. Marlin shoals swim at shallow, moderate, and deep depths, and as such must be caught with a hemp trawling net or greater to consistently catch them. Additionally, because marlin shoals are only found in the Northern Ocean, an eternal brazier must also be built on the boat to withstand the icy waters. Therefore, the player must meet the (boostable) Sailing level requirement of 78 to construct the brazier in order to use this method.
While the shoal is moving to the next stop, they will always be at moderate depths. Upon stopping, they will swim to either shallow or deep depths, before swimming back to moderate depths once the timer reaches the halfway point.
Operating a trawling net is always preferred over rod fishing, as the latter requires the use of one fine fish offcut per fish, while the former uses it as optional bait to grant a 20% chance of catching an extra fish during a stop.
Regardless of the route chosen, Marlin shoals always stop for 50 ticks (30s) at specific points along their path.

Catch chance
A roll for a successful catch is performed every 3 ticks (1.8s), indicated by the small amount of Sailing experience granted whenever this occurs. This can be increased to every 2 ticks (1.2s) by clicking the trawling net every tick. For crewmates, a roll is performed every 5 ticks (3s), giving a flat 4% chance of a successful catch.
If rod fishing, a roll is performed every 5 ticks (3s) - the same as regular fishing.
The following success rates are provided by Jagex.

Brittle Isle
One lap of the Brittle Island route takes 854 ticks (8 minutes and 32 seconds). This route requires at least a camphor hull, but preferably a rosewood hull to follow and reasonably make use of as it moves very quickly.
While this route has less danger than the Weissmere route, it moves significantly faster between stops and requires a gale catcher and Camphor mast and canvas sails or better to maintain proximity to the shoal for as long as possible. Using wind motes on stops 4-5, 6-7, and 8-9 are most effective. Conditionally use motes on 9-1, 3-4, and 5-6 (preferred in that order) if you have three wind motes currently stored. Use paths 1-2, 2-3, and 7-8 to generate additional motes.

Weissmere
One lap of the Weissmere route takes 735 ticks (7 minutes and 21 seconds). The Weissmere shoal moves at a slower pace than the Brittle Isle shoal. If sea charting for the Shiverwake Expanse has been completed, several strong rapids can be used along this route.
A pack of armoured kraken are found at the stop south-east of the Iceberg.
