Sailing

A boat (sometimes referred to as a ship or player-owned ship) is a vessel used to train the Sailing skill. They can be used to travel between mooring points and to engage with various activities at sea, including salvaging, Barracuda trials, sea charting, and port tasks. Boats can be purchased from any shipwright after completion of the Pandemonium quest.

To board a boat, use the gangplank or mooring point at the port or island where the boat is located. A boat's location can be set by disembarking, by clicking a buoy at sea, or by speaking to a shipwright, who can call a port wizard to summon it. Boats can only be located at a single port at a time.

At level 1 Sailing, players may own only one boat, but more boats can be owned at higher levels:

Types of boats

Different types of boats have different Sailing level requirements to obtain and use. All boats have a base number of hitpoints, which can be improved through upgrading the hull. A raft can be obtained as a reward for completing the Pandemonium quest. The required levels are not boostable.

Sailing Level Boat Image Size Core boat parts Facility hotspots Player capacity Crew slots Cost
1 Tiny
(1x3)
1 2 0 1,000
15 Small
(2x5)
7 5 2 15,000
50 Medium
(3x10)
11 10 5 200,000

Broadly speaking:

  • A raft is tiny, simple to upgrade and very cheap to teleport around for quick access to sailing in any port. But it is quite fragile and has only a single hotspot for either the cargo hold, or other facilities.
  • A skiff is fast and mobile, with enough space and several facilities more than sufficient for exploring.
  • A sloop is large and sturdy, with numerous hotspots for multiple seafaring activities and well-equipped for combat. It is, however, hugely expensive to upgrade or retrieve, and cannot fit in certain small spaces.

It's a good idea to own all three boat types when available, since the skiff is required for Barracuda Trials, only the raft can access certain locations for sea charting, and the sloop is a noticeable upgrade in terms of storage space and efficiency of combat, salvaging and sea trawling.

Damage and repair

Like players, boats have hitpoints based on their hull and keel; however, unlike players, boat hitpoints do not recover over time. Damage to a boat can be recovered in multiple ways:

  • When a hull or keel is upgraded, a boat will be restored to its maximum health.
  • Shipwright Seb in the shipyard can repair a boat for 50 coins per missing hitpoints. This fee can be taken directly from the bank.
  • Players may use repair kits on the boat to restore different amounts of hitpoints based on the level of the kit.

If a boat's hitpoints drop to 0, the boat will capsize. Capsized boats can be retrieved by speaking to any shipwright, who will call a port wizard to retrieve the boat for a fee.

If a boat capsizes, a player teleports from their boat while at sea, or a player dies on their boat while at sea, all courier crates, bounty items, shipwreck salvage, trawling fish, and fish-filled crates will be lost from the cargo hold. Other items such as cannonballs, repair kits, fish offcuts, and empty fish crates will be kept.

Teleportation

Summon Boat is a spell on the standard spellbook that requires 56 Magic and allows a player to instantly move their boat to the nearest mooring point. Boats must have a teleport focus or greater teleport focus installed to be eligible for teleportation. Casting Summon Boat will cause a player to lose all courier crates, bounty items, shipwreck salvage, trawling fish, and fish-filled crates that are stored in the cargo hold. Other items such as cannonballs, repair kits, fish offcuts, and empty fish crates will be kept.

Teleport to boat requires 67 Magic and teleports the player to their boat's location. Boats must have a greater teleport focus to be eligible as a teleport destination.

Boat bottles are used to store boats and move them to another port. Similarly, players can pay a shipwright to relocate or recover a capsized boat, though one is not found at every mooring point. Certain drinks in sealed crates also can move the boat to specific ports, for example the bottle of fishier bladderier stout moves it to Rellekka and the bottle of portal nexus perry to Port Sarim.

Boat Recovery Costs
Type Base Recovery Cost[a]
Raft 250
Skiff 4,125
Sloop 50,000
  1. ^ Recovery fees increase with the amount of damage inflicted on the boat and the components/facilities built on the boat

Most means of teleporting a boat, including capsizing, remove certain items from the cargo hold: these include salvage, port task crates, bounty task items, and non-empty crates of fish. However, having membership lapse while at sea then logging in on a free-to-play world will safely transport a boat to its most recent docking point with all cargo intact.

Customisation and upgrades

Shipbuilding allows for customisation and upgrading of a boat through the addition of facilities and improved ship components such as hulls, helms, and keels. Different types of boats allow for different numbers of facilities and different levels of component customisation.

The Shipyard is used to customise boats. It can be accessed by speaking to any shipwright.

Guest access and world switching

Other players, including ironmen, may enter a host's vessel by selecting the Board-friend option on a gangplank or mooring point. However, if you switch worlds while on another person's boat, you will end up on Limbo until you hop back to the world they are on.

If switching worlds while on your own boat, your boat will switch with you and you will remain in the same location. Additionally, your crewmates will briefly stop working until they move back into their assigned positions.

Destroy a boat

Players can destroy their boat by speaking with any shipwright. This can be beneficial if wishing to replace one boat with another, for example to replace a raft with a different type of boat. It can also be used to re-roll the randomly generated name given to a boat prior to having access to Sleve McDichael at 61 Sailing, although this alternative can be expensive for sloops.

Boat names

Boats are randomly assigned a name when purchased, but this name can be changed at Sleve McDichael on the Tear of the Soul, who will randomly select a new name for any boat for the cost of one unnoted cider. At level 99, players can use the Sailing skillcape perk to rename their boat at any time with the descriptor and noun individually chosen from a list.

Trivia

  • Attempting to light a fire on your boat will display the message The boat is too damp and unstable to light a fire here.
