A hammerhead shark (positioned on the bow of a Sloop) being fired upon by cannons from both sides of the ship

A cannon is a boat facility that can be built and is involved in boat combat. Cannons have a 7 tick attack speed and can only fire cannonballs up to their own tier (e.g. an iron cannon can fire bronze and iron cannonballs, but not steel cannonballs). Cannons must be positioned on the same side of the boat as the target to attack. It is possible to attack with both cannons simultaneously by building both cannons on the same side of the boat, or if the target is positioned directly in front of or behind the boat with a cannon on either side.

When a player operates a cannon, both Sailing and Ranged experience is gained. When a crewmate operates a cannon, only Sailing experience is gained.

A visible Sailing boost can be used to build a higher tier cannon. Visible boosts for Sailing and Ranged levels can also be used to fire from cannons.

While an anchor is dropped and either the player or a crewmate is manning the helm, the boat can be turned on the spot while another character mans a cannon to allow the ship to quickly face new targets. Cannonballs can be recovered with the use of a ballistic attractor, which automatically recovers 60% of cannonballs fired.

When a player mounts a cannon, the damage of the cannonballs are affected by the type of cannon used, the type of cannonballs used, Ranged-boosting prayers such as Rigour, and the player's visible Ranged level.

Preferred cannonballs can be set by using them on a cannon to avoid automatically using the highest tier you are carrying.

  1. ^ The Construction level requirement can be bypassed by paying a gold fee to a Shipwright.
  2. ^ A player manning a cannon increases its accuracy to this amount. This type of accuracy is considered Heavy Ranged.

Extra Info

  • Cannons benefit from the player’s ranged accuracy and strength bonuses. Ranged strength bonuses from the weapon, shield, and ammunition slots are excluded from this calculation.
    • Take precaution with items where the applied strength bonus is conditional, eg. a charged Dizana's Quiver.

Changes

Date Changes
1 April 2026
(Update)
  • Applied a buff to cannons when they are actively manned by a player, ensuring that a player using a cannon is on par to the DPS of traditional combat +2 Crew members using cannons.
  • Enabled ranged modifiers such as the Void Armour effect and Ranged Prayers to work in cannon combat, meaning your worn ranged gear will now correctly apply its stats to the overall damage.
18 March 2026
(Update)
  • The attack speed of all cannons was decreased from 5 ticks (3s) to 7 ticks (4.2s). To compensate, their accuracy and strength were increased.
  • You can now build two cannons on the same side of your Sloop.
10 December 2025
(Update)

Cannons can now be used with a temporary sailing boost.
