Sailing

Ocean encounters are events that appear randomly while Sailing, offering small rewards and Sailing experience. When a boat is moving, a 120 tick (72 second) timer counts down, and when it hits zero, an event has a 1/6 chance to spawn. If an event doesn't spawn, the chance increases to 2/6 after the next interval, then 3/6 after the third, and so on until an event is guaranteed after six intervals lapse. Events spawn ahead of the bow, and disappear after one minute.

On a ship outfitted with a keg of kraken ink stout, the spawn interval is reduced from 120 to 115 ticks (69 seconds), resulting in approximately 4% more encounters over time. On average, an event spawns every 3:20 (or 3:11 with a stout keg). The timer pauses if a boat is stationary and resets when logging out or when an encounter spawns. Each time the player disembarks, 20 ticks are added back to the timer, though the timer can never exceed 115 or 120 ticks.

The timer only counts down if the boat has moved to a new tile, so for instance moving horizontally at a speed of 2 quarter-tiles per tick would effectively double the duration of an interval, as the boat would only see a new tile every other tick. However, increasing the speed beyond 4 quarter-tiles per tick does not influence the duration between spawns. A speed of 4 can be achieved by moving ahead at the lowest speed, a configuration in which players can AFK for several minutes at a time if they wish to focus on nothing but spawning ocean encounters.

A sound effect (id 10969) is played when an event spawns in the player's vicinity.
