Castaways can be found as an ocean encounter while Sailing. Rescuing them on your boat by interacting with them rewards 5x the player's Sailing level in experience. Dropping them off at a gangplank or mooring point rewards the player with 10x the player's Sailing level as experience. If the castaway is a dog however, this bonus is increased to 15x the player's Sailing level as experience. Castaways can still be dropped off at ports that you lack the requirements to dock at.

Rescuing humans and the volleyball awards in total 15x the player's Sailing level as experience. Rescuing a dog awards in total 20x the player's Sailing level as experience.

Castaways can be seen by other players while they are on boats. Logging out or disconnecting will cause the castaway to disappear, losing the chance to drop them on land.

• The Wilson castaway is a reference to the companion made by Tom Hanks' character Chuck Noland in the movie Cast Away. The same reference is made by Gnome the ball, a point of interest for sea charting, and in Wilhelm.
• In development, the dog castaway event had two dogs with only one getting rescued, as a reference to Titanic; it was changed for being too saddening.
