Halibut shoals are a type of fish shoal found out at sea. They can be fished for raw halibut via deep sea trawling, requiring level 83 Fishing and granting 195.5 experience per successful catch with a trawling net, or 39.1 if caught with a fishing rod.
Unlike coastal fishing spots, players must use a boat to reach fish shoals and operate a trawling net within range of it, whilst matching the depth the shoal is currently swimming in. Halibut shoals swim at shallow and moderate depths, and as such must be caught with a linen trawling net or greater to consistently catch them.
While the shoal is moving to the next stop, they will always be at moderate depths. Upon stopping, they will swim up to shallow depths, before swimming back down to moderate depths once the timer reaches the halfway point.
Operating a trawling net is always preferred over rod fishing, as the latter requires the use of one fine fish offcut per fish, while the former uses it as optional bait to grant a 20% chance of catching an extra fish during a stop.
Regardless of the route chosen, Halibut shoals always stop for 80 ticks (48s) at specific points along their path.

Port Roberts shoal is closer to a dock with a crewmember who can bank all the fish, but has aggressive Pygmy Krakens and Amoured Krakens. Southern Expanse is a bit south of Deepfin Point and farther from a dock, but has no aggressive sea creatures.

Catch chance
A roll for a successful catch is performed every 3 ticks (1.8s), indicated by the small amount of Sailing experience granted whenever this occurs. This can be increased to every 2 ticks (1.2s) by clicking the trawling net every tick. For crewmates, a roll is performed every 5 ticks (3s), giving a flat 4% chance of a successful catch.
If rod fishing, a roll is performed every 5 ticks (3s) - the same as regular fishing.

Port Roberts
One lap of the Port Roberts route takes 1,198 ticks (11 minutes and 59 seconds). This route has 2 stops near pygmy kraken and armoured kraken, but they can sometimes be avoided with careful navigation. Try "parking" the boat at the edge of the collection range for these stops, and bring repair kits in case other players drag the krakens towards you.
This shoal moves clockwise, and is recommended for players without access to empty fish crates as it passes directly next to a port.

Southern Expanse
One lap of the Southern Expanse route takes 1,315 ticks (13 minutes and 9 seconds). This shoal moves counterclockwise and requires an adamant helm or better in order to sail through tangled kelp.
While this is a winding route with many stops, it contains no enemies and has a few stops right next to each other. The fact that the closest bank is quite far at Deepfin Point or Sunbleak Island (if built) does not make too much difference with empty fish crates, as higher level cargo holds will take hours to fill while using them.
