Karil's crossbow is a two-handed ranged weapon that is part of Karil the Tainted's set. It requires 70 Ranged to wield. It fires bolt racks, which break upon firing. When equipped with the other three pieces of Karil the Tainted's set the wearer will receive the set effect, which has a chance to temporarily lower their target's Agility level. Additionally, if an amulet of the damned is worn alongside the set, there is also a 25% chance for each attack to deal a second hit for half the damage of the first.

Unlike standard crossbows, it is wielded in both hands. Furthermore, regular crossbows fire fewer, more powerful shots, meaning Karil's crossbow is actually similar in function to a shortbow; this gives it a potentially higher damage per second, at the expense of the shield slot. The crossbow has an attack range of 8. Longrange increases attack range by 2.

This weapon is comparable to a magic shortbow and its imbued counterpart. While Karil's offers a longer range, a +15 or +9 greater ranged attack bonus respectively, and a passive chance to hit twice when using the full Karil set and amulet of the damned, the magic shortbow variants offer identical strength when using amethyst arrows, which are not guaranteed to be consumed with each shot. In addition, the magic shortbows do not degrade. Players on a budget or fighting monsters with low ranged defence may find the magic shortbow to be the preferable option.

Degradation

Barrows equipment degrades as it is used. Equipment received from the Barrows reward chest is fully repaired and can be used for 15 hours of combat until it degrades completely and requires repair before it can be used again. Barrows armour degrades even if the player is using protection prayers or not taking damage. Barrows equipment does not suffer in performance as it degrades from fully repaired to fully degraded. Fully repaired Barrows items start out with no numbers in their names, e.g. Karil's crossbow. It will become Karil's crossbow 100 the first time it's used in combat. Eventually it will degrade to Karil's crossbow 75, then 50, then 25 and finally 0 at which point the equipment will be unusable until repaired. Additionally, Barrows equipment may only be traded if fully repaired or fully degraded.

When dropped or lost on dangerous PvP death, any piece of Barrows equipment will automatically degrade to 0. Players who attempt to drop Barrows equipment will receive a warning message about this. As a bank note, dropping will not break the equipment.

There are two ways to repair Barrows equipment. Players can talk to any of the NPCs listed below and they will repair the items for a price, or repair the pieces themselves using an armour stand in any player-owned house. The equipment can be repaired at any stage, and the cost will be adjusted according to how much it has degraded. The repair costs below are as if the equipment has fully degraded.

The following NPCs can repair the equipment:

It costs less to repair Barrows equipment at an armour stand compared to paying an NPC. Stat boosts do affect the price of repair. The formula used to calculate the cost at a repair stand is:

A player with a Smithing level of 60, for instance, would pay 70% of normal cost:

Simply put, every 2 Smithing levels reduces the repair cost by 1% when compared to an NPC vendor. At level 99 this equals roughly 50% in savings.

Trivia

  • Karil's crossbow is based on the real life Chu-Ko-Nu, an ancient Chinese crossbow that used a rapid fire system.
  • Karil's crossbow, or at least the inspiration for its design, may have originated from the Eastern Lands, as Ak-Haranu, a trader from the Eastern Lands, sells bolt racks which are compatible with the crossbow.
    • Additionally, in the The Fall of Six story, it is said that Sliske obtained the armour and weapons he gave to the Barrows brothers from "many distant lands", supporting the possibility that the crossbow is from the Eastern Lands.[1]
    • In Postbag from the Hedge issue 17, Ak-Haranu reveals that the bolt racks are "from empire's armies" which he is selling to get home.[2]
