The Principality of Burthorpe, referred to colloquially as Burthorpe, is a military principality north-west of Falador and north of Taverley. It's led by Crown Prince Anlaf and is home to the Burthorpe Imperial Guard, who defend the citadel standing between Burthorpe and Trollheim against trolls in the ongoing Burthorpe–Troll Country War.
Burthorpe is one of the only locations in Asgarnia that isn't directly controlled by the White Knights, who many of Burthorpe's residents believe are taking advantage of Asgarnia's King, the father of Prince Anlaf.
Transportation
Several teleports bring players into or close to Burthorpe, listed here with their arrival destination. From closest to farthest:
Games necklace — castle entrance.
Minigame teleport — Burthorpe Games Room. Usable once every twenty minutes.
Combat bracelet — Warriors' Guild entrance.
Teleport to House — Taverley, moderately south of the castle. Requires a POH in Taverley.
Falador Teleport — Falador town square, very far south-east of the castle.
On foot, there are several entrances to Burthorpe:
- Southwards, Burthorpe is connected to Taverley.
- Northwards, a path from the city leads to and from the Death Plateau and Trollheim.
- A shortcut exists between the city and the Chaos Temple, near Goblin Village. The shortcut requires 14 Agility and completion of the Easy Falador Diary.
History
It is not currently known when Burthorpe first formed, but it was likely sometime during the Fifth Age, alongside the rest of Asgarnia. Humans may have settled there prior to Asgarnia's formation, however, as towns like Taverley already existed during the Fourth Age. Burthorpe's current leader, Prince Anlaf, was born around year 130 or 140 of the Fifth Age; his father, Asgarnia's King Vallance, gave Anlaf lordship of Burthorpe to provide leadership experience. For years Anlaf ruled Burthorpe, raising the Burthorpe Imperial Guard as its primary defence in the Burthorpe–Troll Country War.
Since its formation, Burthorpe has consistently been caught up in the Asgarnian conflict between the White Knights and their opposition, the Kinshra. After the White Knights declared that the Kinshra no longer had power in Asgarnia, a prolonged war between the two forces broke out, continuing to this day. Money soon began to run low for the White Knights as campaigns against the Kinshra, such as the famous Dawn Ascent, required hefty funding. As such, the White Knights wished to stop funding the Burthorpe Imperial Guard and take control of Burthorpe themselves. However, the White Knights agreed to continue funding the Burthorpe Imperial Guard and allow them to maintain their independence if they were able to destroy the troll camp on Death Plateau.[1] As such, the war has become a primary focus for Burthorpe.

Trivia
- Speaking to any member of the Imperial Guard except for major NPCs, (essentially any attackable Soldier), results in "jargon", which is actually a statement in the Latin language. A few of these statements and their English translations are given below, and a more extensive list of these Latin statements and their English translations can be found on the NPC page for the attackable soldiers.
- "Te audire non possume. Musa sapientum fixa est in aure" - "I can't hear you. I have a banana stuck in my ear."
- "Noli me covare, ego te vocabo" - "I don't want you to call me, I'll call you."
- "Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari?" - "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
- "Fac ut gaudeam" - "Make me happy."
