Karil the Tainted's equipment

Karil the Tainted's equipment is a set of Ranged armour and crossbow from the Barrows minigame. Completing the Barrows minigame does not guarantee players will get a Barrows item. The armour itself requires 70 Defence and 70 Ranged to equip, while the crossbow requires 70 Ranged to wield.

As Karil uses Ranged, his armour gives a high Magic Defence bonus, making it popular for fighting enemies with powerful Magic attacks even when using melee. Karil's crossbow, unlike many other crossbows, is two-handed and requires a special type of ammunition called Bolt racks. Bolt racks can be obtained by opening chests in the Barrows minigame, buying from Ak-Haranu on the Port Phasmatys docks for 50 coins each, buying them from the Emblem Trader for 360 Bounty Hunter points each, or the Last Man Standing shop, or trading with another player.

Although many parts of it see use, the full set is rarely seen in unison. A common complaint is how situational the set effect is and how low the stats are for such a high level degradable armour set. Karil's crossbow is less accurate than a Rune crossbow, and the ammunition is weaker than steel bolts (as Bolt racks give +55 Ranged Strength). However, the Karil's crossbow does have the speed of a Magic shortbow, and the bolt racks match the strength of amethyst arrows.

Karil's armour will still degrade from combat even when not taking damage, such as when safespotting.

Set effect

A player activating Karil's set effect, Tainted Shot.

Tainted Shot: If the Ranged attack is successful, it has a 25% chance of lowering the target player's Agility level by 20%.

When Karil's set and the Amulet of the damned are equipped, the wearer gains a 25% chance of hitting twice with one attack. The second hit will deal half the damage of the first hit.

Degradation

Barrows equipment degrades as it is used. Equipment received from the Barrows reward chest is fully repaired and can be used for 15 hours of combat until it degrades completely and requires repair before it can be used again. Barrows armour degrades even if the player is using protection prayers or not taking damage. Barrows equipment does not suffer in performance as it degrades from fully repaired to fully degraded. Fully repaired Barrows items start out with no numbers in their names, e.g. Karil the Tainted's equipment. It will become Karil the Tainted's equipment 100 the first time it's used in combat. Eventually it will degrade to Karil the Tainted's equipment 75, then 50, then 25 and finally 0 at which point the equipment will be unusable until repaired. Additionally, Barrows equipment may only be traded if fully repaired or fully degraded.

When dropped or lost on dangerous PvP death, any piece of Barrows equipment will automatically degrade to 0. Players who attempt to drop Barrows equipment will receive a warning message about this. As a bank note, dropping will not break the equipment.

There are two ways to repair Barrows equipment. Players can talk to any of the NPCs listed below and they will repair the items for a price, or repair the pieces themselves using an armour stand in any player-owned house. The equipment can be repaired at any stage, and the cost will be adjusted according to how much it has degraded. The repair costs below are as if the equipment has fully degraded.

The following NPCs can repair the equipment:

It costs less to repair Barrows equipment at an armour stand compared to paying an NPC. Stat boosts do affect the price of repair. The formula used to calculate the cost at a repair stand is:

A player with a Smithing level of 60, for instance, would pay 70% of normal cost:

Simply put, every 2 Smithing levels reduces the repair cost by 1% when compared to an NPC vendor. At level 99 this equals roughly 50% in savings.
