The ancient godsword is one of the five variants of the Godsword created by using an ancient hilt, obtained from Nex, on a completed godsword blade. As with all godsword variants, it requires level 75 Attack to wield.

The design of the hilt bears the Zarosian symbol and was created under Nex's orders after her escape from the Ancient Prison. Though the hilt was created, it never saw usage, as the four armies of the gods joined forces to imprison Nex once more before the weapon could be completed.[1]

As a Zarosian item, it will also grant god protection towards Zarosian NPCs in the God Wars Dungeon.

Special attack

A player uses Blood Sacrifice, the ancient godsword's special attack.

Like all godswords, the ancient godsword has a special attack: Blood Sacrifice. In addition to doubled accuracy, it inflicts damage with a 10% higher maximum hit than a normal attack, consuming 50% of the player's special attack energy.

Upon a successful hit, the target will be marked for sacrifice and will have eight ticks (4.8 seconds) to move at least five tiles away from the attacker. If the target fails to do so, they will take 25 typeless magic damage, and the attacker will be healed for 15% of the target's max Hitpoints level, up to a cap of 25 against NPCs and 15 against players. The sacrifice must deal the full 25 damage in order to receive the full healing effect, otherwise the attacker will only be healed for the damage done by the sacrifice up to the max of 15%. Since sacrifice damage is typeless, praying Protect from Magic will not reduce its damage.

The magic damage will always hit 0 on cyclopes in the Warriors' Guild, as with all non-melee damage there.

It is possible to stack the special attack on the same target, dealing 25 damage before the effect of the second special attack activates, resulting in a total damage of 50.

Utility

Players often use the special attack as a supplement for food for very specific encounters such as Vardorvis and player killing.

In player versus player encounters, the godsword's delayed 25 damage can be used as a supplement for a powerful finisher, as player killers typically bring Ice spells or Entangle which prevent players from moving and avoiding the 25 damage.

Since the player only needs to successfully hit and deal damage in order to get the minimum health required, players can swap weapons after landing the special attack rather than having to continue using it.

To get the full heal of 25 hitpoints from an NPC, the monster in question would need to have 167 or higher hitpoints. If the monster has less than this amount, the saradomin godsword could potentially heal more. In order for the saradomin godsword to surpass the ancient godsword's healing capability on high-health targets, its special attack would need to deal at least 50+ damage. Otherwise, the ancient godsword would heal better, since its special attack is unaffected by strength bonuses.

Since a player's Hitpoints level is capped at 99, the godsword will heal up to 14 health instead.

Trivia

  • On release, there was a glitch with the ancient godsword's special attack that allowed multiple players to hit a player in single-way combat for one hit. Players who abused the glitch were given two week bans.
  • An oversight was discovered with the godsword's special attack wherein if a player marked for sacrifice teleported or left an instance, with the attacker doing the same and still remaining within 5 tiles within the 4.8-second activation window, the damage of Blood Sacrifice would still be dealt to the target even in safe areas. If the damage resulted in death, it was considered an unsafe PvP death. This was fixed in an update.[2]
  • While a target is marked for sacrifice after successfully landing a hit with the godsword's special attack, it is impossible to dismantle it.
  • This godsword is, so far, the only variant that doesn't have an ornament kit.
