Drakes are high level Slayer monsters found in the Karuulm Slayer Dungeon. They can drop their claws and teeth, which are used to upgrade the boots of stone and holy sandals into boots of brimstone and devout boots, respectively. These items are five times more common when killed on a Slayer task.
Drakes use both ranged and ranged melee, so melee armour is recommended against their attacks. Additionally, they will launch a fireball at the player's position, which deals 6-8 damage per hit for four hits if dragonfire protection is not used. It functions the same as chromatic dragonfire, although it can also be avoided by stepping away from the target tile.
Prior to completion of the elite Kourend & Kebos diary, boots of stone, boots of brimstone or granite boots must be worn within the dungeon to avoid taking constant damage.
Drakes are considered draconic and as such dragonbane weapons are very effective. They take 50% more damage from water spells.
A superior version of the drake, the guardian drake, can occasionally appear if superiors are enabled. Guardian drakes additionally have a special attack that will deal heavy damage and stun the player if they do not move out of melee distance in time, so flinching or using ranged weapons are recommended when killing them.
Most players tend to block drakes despite them being cannonable; they have a very high weight, somewhat lackluster drops and high stats for their level, in addition to their two flat armour value. It is recommended to kill drakes in the task-only area, as while both rooms are still large, the task-only area is smaller for a cannon to make the most out of.
Requirements
- Level
84 to deal damage or receive a task.
- Access to Mount Karuulm.
Recommendations
- High combat stats. Although not required, see the skill levels below for an indication of the advised stats:
29+, 62+ for shortcuts at the volcano, if not using Rada's blessing 3 or higher for transportation
Transportation
- Mount Karuulm teleport from Rada's blessing 3 or Rada's blessing 4.
- Using the fairy ring (code CIR) and travelling up the volcano
- Casting Battlefront Teleport or using its magic tablet variant, and running north-west
- The skills necklace and Farming cape provide teleports to the nearby Farming Guild just south-west.
Mechanics
Drakes' normal ranged attacks can be fully blocked by protect from missiles.
Drakes do not require a fire protection shield or potion to be slain, unlike most other dragons. However, after seven auto-attacks, drakes will launch a volcanic breath towards the player's current position, which deals 6-8 damage for four hits if the player is struck by the projectile.
- The levels of dragonfire protection apply to this special attack.
- Having a form of dragonfire protection will reduce this to 3-4 damage.
- Wielding a dragonfire shield, dragonfire ward, or anti-dragon shield alongside drinking an antifire will negate the damage.
- Using a Super antifire potion or its extended version will negate the damage, allowing you to wear a defender or use a blowpipe.
Alternatively, moving one tile elsewhere when the projectile is launched allows complete avoidance.
Together, a player can take no damage when using protect from missiles and dragonfire protection, if attacking from at least 1 tile away.

- Herb sack
Ranged
Note that gear-setups with the toxic blowpipe (off-task) only marginally increase DPS over the much cheaper Hunters' sunlight crossbow when coupled with Void equipment. Crossbows can also be paired with a shield that provides protection from dragonfire, if not wanting to dodge the fire attacks.
- Inventory
- Toxic blowpipe as a substitute for crossbow and anti-dragon shield. Make sure to use Super antifire potion or dodge the fire.
- Holy wrench
