A mossy key grants players access to Bryophyta's lair in the moss giant section of the Varrock Sewers and unlocks Bryophyta's chest after defeating her.

A key is consumed when looting the chest, and one key is also required to access Bryophyta's lair for the first time, after which the lair can be freely entered. The key is not consumed when unlocking access to Bryophyta's lair for the first time. Additionally, five keys are needed in order to complete the Bryophyta Champion combat achievement as the achievement kill count is increased upon looting the chest. It is possible to hold more than one mossy key at once.

The drop rate of mossy keys is 1/150 from moss giants, 1/120 from Iorwerth Dungeon moss giants, and 1/100 from Wilderness moss giants. However, while on a moss giant Slayer task, the drop rate is increased to 1/75 from regular moss giants, and 1/40 from Iorwerth Dungeon moss giants (due to an additional task-only drop at a rate of 1/60).

This drop rate increase does not remain when killing moss giants outside of the Wilderness when on a Wilderness Slayer task.^[1] Boosts to the drop rate do not stack with each other, meaning that if a moss giant is killed in the Wilderness as part of a Slayer task, the rate remains at 1/75.^[2] The increased drop rate in the Wilderness is also extended to free-to-play accounts, and the Slayer task boost may still apply in free-to-play worlds in the event an account had a moss giant task when their membership lapsed.^[3]
