Bronze key red

Shade keys are used in the Shades of Mort'ton minigame. They can be obtained as a reward for cremating a shade, and are used to open chests and doors in the Shade Catacombs. Shade keys come in combinations of 1 of 5 metals, and 1 of 5 colours, with each combination corresponding to 1 of 25 chest types. At least 1 key of any type is required to enter the catacombs, though it is not consumed on use for opening a door.

Metal type and loop colour

The type of metal the key is made of directly determines the list of potential rewards the player can obtain from the corresponding chest. For example, bronze chests will only contain low-level armour and weapons, such as steel or black, while silver chests will yield higher value items, such as mithril, adamant or rune equipment. Each chest has a long list of possible rewards, including runes, jewellery, clue scrolls, and melee armour and weapons. There is also a chance to receive swamp paste.

The colour of the loop of the key determines the probabilities of receiving each reward from its list. Keys of "better" colours are more likely to yield better rewards. The order of colours, from worst to best, is red, brown, crimson, black, purple.

In short: all keys of the same metal type have the same reward list; the colour of the key only affects the probabilities of obtaining specific items.

Trivia

  • Black key black is the only shade key where the loop half and tooth half share the same colour.
  • The only type of key a player may obtain without gaining Prayer experience is the bronze variety.
  • When dropped by shade remain cremation, they will stay on the ground and not be visible by other players for five minutes.
