The small key is an item dug up on Laguna Aurorae by following the lockbox directions from the lockbox on Sunbleak Island: "On Laguna Aurorae, step out your front door to face the sunrise, then take another step for each of your neighbours."

The small key can be obtained without ever obtaining the lockbox directions, and can be banked should the player not have the level 72 Sailing requirement to dock on Sunbleak Island.
