The charred key is an item obtained by bringing the captain's log to Gerardus once the Unquiet Ocean is fully charted, which requires a Sailing level of at least 47 and to have started Troubled Tortugans.

It is used to open the old chest in the Charred Dungeon beneath Charred Island, which unlocks Zamorakian paint for boat trims. As the chest is located on Charred Island, the paint requires a Sailing level of at least 60 to obtain. Players will need a rope the first time they enter the dungeon, which spawns on the southern tip of the island.
