The old chest is located in the Charred Dungeon beneath Charred Island. A charred key (given by Gerardus after fully charting the Unquiet Ocean) is used to unlock this chest and an unlimited supply of Zamorakian paint. A rope is needed to enter the Charred Dungeon if the player has not been there before; one can be found on top of a crate near the Charred Island bank chest space.
Getting to the chest requires running past red and black dragons, so care is needed if you have a low combat level. The chest itself is in a safe area.
If you teleport out of the dungeon you will need to retrieve your boat via a Shipwright or use one of the boat teleportation spells as there is no other way to get to the island.
