The captain's log is an item obtained during Pandemonium from Junior Jim. Its primary use is to track courier and bounty tasks that the player has chosen to take on, as well as tracking sea charting completion.

The captain's log is required to be in the player's inventory when speaking to Chartin' Charles McAtless in the Pandemonium Cave for Sailing training, as well as when speaking to Gerardus on Port Roberts for special items that unlock certain boat paints.

If lost, another can be obtained from either Junior Jim or the cargo hold of a boat.

Tasks can be obtained from the Notice boards at certain sailing ports or from NPCs during quests, which occurs during Prying Times. They are removed upon completion or from being cancelled. Multiple tasks can be held at any one time if you have the required Sailing level. Two at level 7, three at level 28, four at level 56 and five port tasks at level 84.

The sea charting interface shows a collection of tasks that players can accomplish via Sailing in order to gain experience, usually at a one-time availability or with drastically reduced experience upon further attempts. Players may sort tasks by their completion, the area they are found in, and whether they have the requirements to accomplish them. Many charting tasks require use of the charting tools, though some can be accomplished by just clicking on the appropriate scenery when close enough. Not all charting tasks will require the user to be actively in a boat-one task requires using the spyglass while standing on The Pandemonium island.
