The small key is an item dug up on Ynysdail by following the lockbox directions from the lockbox on Lledrith Island: "On Ynysdail, dig where you dock, then figure out a safer place to bury the key."
The small key can be obtained without ever obtaining the lockbox directions; upon opening the lockbox on Lledrith Island with this small key, players are given the dragon salvaging hook schematic.
