Mort'ton (Jagex: , [a]) is a small, dilapidated town in the Mort Myre Swamp, inhabited by afflicted humans and ghostly shades. The town is known for the Shades of Mort'ton quest and the minigame of the same name. The Barrows burial mounds are found just to the east.

History

The following lore is sourced from the Diary of Herbi Flax and dialogue with Gadderanks.

Mort'ton was once a quiet market town that specialised in death, founded late in the Fourth Age. By using the natural caves underneath the town as tombs, Mort'ton became known for specializing in cremations with pyre logs. The town, much like others in Morytania, were later subjugated by the vampyres and likely paid blood tithes. Unfortunately, a strange mist sent from the Sanguinesti region plagued the villagers of Mort'ton, turning them into afflicted. Despite the attempts of Herbi Flax and his assistant Liornish Stemplehair, they were unable to find a permanent cure and succumbed to its infection.

The same mist also caused the remains underneath the catacombs to reanimate, though only Loar Shades - the weakest of the six types, were found roaming the village grounds. The other five - Phrin, Riyl, Asyn, Fiyr and Urium Shades, remain in the catacombs where they were interred. The shades have not been seen in the surrounding area, indicating that they were limited to the town's nearby vicinity.

The vampyres, unaware of the plague, revisited the village to obtain blood tithes. The vampyre noble Malak consumed some of the blood collected from the town, but became ill as a result. The vampyres then stopped taking tithes from the village.

During year 169 of the Fifth Age, an adventurer stumbled upon the ruins of Mort'ton and discovered Herbi's diary. By using a serum 207 on two prominent inhabitants, Ulsquire Shauncy and Razmire Keelgan, they were able to discover how to cremate the shade remains and learned where the shades' burial place was. The adventurer later perfected a serum 208 by sanctifying the serum 207 at the Flamtaer temple, thus allowing Ulsquire and Razmire to be permanently cured of the plague.

Shades of Mort'ton

North of the town is the Flamtaer temple, which players rebuild in the Shades of Mort'ton minigame. On the south and west sides of the town are funeral pyres for burning shade remains, and players can enter the dungeon just east of the Flamtaer temple to access the accompanying shade catacombs.
