The tree wizards' journal is a journal obtained from chests within the Shade Catacombs. Higher tier chests give a higher chance of obtaining the journal, as well as wearing a ring of wealth. Opening the journal for the first time gives players a runescroll of swampbark, which can be read to unlock the ability to create swampbark armour.
When the journal is first opened, a message in the chatbox will state "As you open the ancient notes, a rough scroll falls out." After having read the book once, the player will from now on receive the accompanying scroll as a reward from the chest whenever otherwise a book would have been obtained.
Written by a Zarosian warlock named Xazyd Wier, who lived during the early years of the Third Age, the journal describes their experiences with a great hollow tree after the fall of Kharyrll.
The journal can be retrieved from the bookcase in a player-owned house.

I fled in the night as the turncloaks breached the fortress and I now find myself held up in a great hollow tree that sits amid an overgrown ruin. Tonight I shall sleep here within this tree and then move farther south - perhaps the coast has avoided destruction?
How long has it been? I dreamt of being stuck within a tree, I've written multiple entries yet this seems to only be my second... What vile trap have I willfully climbed into? My dreams were wild and frantic - I first listened in darkness, unable to move or speak, as the town around me was rebuilt for the hundredth time. After that my voice slowly came back to me and as I groaned in the dim light an old woman responded to my drawn out calls in a low rumble, with questions of sacrifice and blood. Visions floated before me just before I awoke. A shadow of a man passed into a tree and a young woman in a red cloak went by leaving a trail of blood.
As my dreams continue they become clearer and much harder to distinguish from reality. I've become one with the tree and its perception of the natural world is far beyond my own. Today I spoke with a young girl who had come from the south, beyond the Humblethorn wood. She looked quite astonished at first, as to be expected as trees rarely spoke with humans. She wondered how a man becomes armoured within a tree like I am and how long I'd been living like that. Why, now that I think about it the weeds seem less lively now, as if growing in reverse. The young girl started to dance around the tree while dressed in silk robes, the moon sat in the sky a harsh crescent drinking in the scene before the great hollow tree. The taste of blood and ash still lingers many moons later.
The moon dies and is reborn over and over and my time within the tree feels like an eternity as ages come and go. War springs up around me time and time again, winged shadows fill the air, 7 heroes, no... 6 heroes, bright lights take flight as a young man fights a horde of horrific demons. Finally it turns to scenes of fire and blood sacrifice as faint screams of ancient forest dwellers echo throughout my branches.Item sources

Trivia
- The old woman mentioned in the second paragraph is Otrava, who also wrote her own book on the events surrounding the tree.
- The heroes and the winged shadows mentioned in the last paragraph may be referring to the Barrows Brothers, possibly alongside with someone else, leading an assault against the Vampyres during the Third Age. They may also be the Seven Priestly Warriors, who led an assault on Morytania to bless the River Salve in the Fourth Age.
- The "bright lights that take fight" are likely referring to the icyene.
- The "young man fighting a horde of horrific demons" is most likely referring to the Zarosian warrior Torva who originated from the village of Flamtaer, and defended it from a pack of Ripper Demons. This event is detailed in the RuneScape 3 book Nex's Followers.
- Tree Wizard and the weeds "growing in reverse" may be a reference to Taskmaster Series 1, in which Romesh Ranganathan created a reverse video about a Tree Wizard.
- The owner's last name, Wier, may a reference to the weirwood trees from Game of Thrones. These esoteric trees have faces carved into their trunks and have no sense of time.
