The River Salve is a river marking the border between Misthalin and Morytania. The river was blessed by the Seven Priestly Warriors at the end of the Misthalin–Morytania War during the Fourth Age. Some legends claim it was blessed by Saradomin himself, making it a holy barrier between the two kingdoms which, according to legend, will not allow any evil from Morytania to cross its banks.

Players must complete the Priest in Peril quest and receive a blessing from Drezel to be able to cross through Paterdomus and over the river into Morytania.

Transportation

  • The only bridge over the River Salve is attached to the temple of Paterdomus.
  • An ornate railing shortcut is available at 65 Agility and allows players to get to the bridge without going through the whole temple.

Additionally, there is a fairy ring on an island in the middle of the river, accessible with code BIP. This connects to Mort Myre Swamp via a stepping stone that requires 50 Agility to cross.

History

The River Salve flows through the area where Senntisten, the capital of the Zarosian Empire, once stood. Archaeological digs nearby go all the way down to the riverbank suggesting that Senntisten was built all the way down to the river, with it serving as Senntisten's access to the sea.

In the middle of the Fourth Age, the war between Misthalin and the invading Morytanian forces resulted in a final battle near the River Salve in Silvarea.[1] The Seven Priestly Warriors were able to perform a blood ritual over the source of the river, making it kill any vampyres who attempted to cross it.[2][3] All but one of the warriors died in the process and were put to rest at the site of the ritual, and the temple of Paterdomus was built over it soon after.[4]

The blessing of the river, which prevents any creatures of Zamorak from crossing, burns them if they touch it,[5] and any vampyres trapped west of the River Salve are significantly weakened.[6][7] The blessed waters of the river also flowed down through the Mort Ridge Mine, which resulted in special crystals forming which have power over evil.[8] This led to the mines being guarded by a Zamorakian mage, Treus Dayth, but after he failed to defend it from an incursion of Saradominists, Lowerniel Drakan had everyone within the mine slaughtered, bound Treus Dayth's soul to the mine to guard it indefinitely, and then had it sealed.[9]

In the present day, the blessing persists, though many werewolves are known to have crossed the river, kidnapping those who wander too close to it on behalf of the vampyres or smuggling exotic items from Misthalin.[10] They often disguise themselves in hoods, and the player directly witnesses werewolves in Darkness of Hallowvale and werewolves in Sins of the Father kidnapping people from the Silvarea region. Some werewolves are known to have gone further west of the River Salve - the Werewolf Champion can be found beneath the Champions' Guild, a werewolf in human form can be hired as a Sailing crewmate, and Farmer Gricoller all the way in Kourend mentions being visited by two odd-smelling hooded figures who were werewolves sent by the vampyres to inspect the Tithe Farm.[11]

Recently, some Monks of Zamorak have taken over the Paterdomus Temple, who tricked an adventurer into killing the Temple Guardian. This allowed the monks to pollute the River Salve, weakening the blessing, but the adventurer was able to free Drezel and help him purify the Zamorakian pollutant by using rune essence to absorb it.
