Lord Lowerniel Vergidiyad Drakan is the vampyre dictator of Morytania and leader of House Drakan. Drakan is a true-born vampyre hailing from Vampyrium, brought to Gielinor alongside many of his kind by Zaros during the Second Age to contribute to the Zarosian Empire. Drakan later supported Zamorak in his rebellion against Zaros and led an army into the kingdom of Hallowvale, which he swiftly conquered. He installed himself as overlord, renamed the land Morytania, and transformed its capital into a blood-farming ghetto while corrupting the region at large. His rule is marked by persistent violence, most notably the Misthalin-Morytania War, and the Morytania Campaign.[1]

Despite his immense importance in Gielinor's history, Drakan stayed largely unseen by the public throughout much of his reign, until the events of Sins of the Father. He appears to have isolated himself, lamenting that the Stone of Jas, once within his grasp, is now out of reach.[2] During The Blood Moon Rises, the long-running conflict between Drakan's rule and the Myreque comes to a head.

History

Early History

Born to Aramindus Drakan, the head of House Drakan, Lowerniel was raised by his parents alongside his siblings Ranis, Vanescula, and Draynor on the vampyre homeworld of Vampyrium. Aramindus taught Lowerniel the joy of the hunt, which came to be very important to him and his idea of what defined a vampyre.[3] Eventually, Aramindus also decided to take Vanescula along, and Drakan later remarked that her talent was among the best he had seen.[4] Drakan grew to become one of the most powerful amongst his kind, his numerous victories at the "Night of the Blood Moon" festival displaying his immense power.[5] During one of these festivals, Lowerniel brutally killed Aramindus in front of Vanescula, succeeding his father as the head of House Drakan.[6] The burgeoning House Drakan became one of the most prominent Vampyre Houses and ultimately was able to subjugate the other seven Houses under his leadership.[7]

At some point, the vampyres were visited by Zaros, who became known as the Stranger from Afar; he taught the vampyres of higher culture and society, changing them from hunting animals to more civilised beings.[8] While Lowerniel was initially one of the biggest supporters of this change, going so far as to title himself the "Lord of Vampyrium",[9] he would later come to resent it.[10][11] Eventually, Zaros returned to the planet and requested the vampyres join him and contribute to his empire.[12] Following the resulting exodus from Vampyrium, Drakan was among Zaros' most powerful and high-ranking followers, but over time, he grew restless in Zarosian society.

Conquest of Hallowvale

Lowerniel eventually decided to support Zamorak, who promised him the lands of Hallowvale after their victory, and participated in his betrayal against Zaros. Following Zaros' defeat, Lowerniel amassed an army of vampyres and werewolves and laid siege to the Icyene and humans of Hallowvale.

Despite the immense size of his army, Lowerniel was unable to break through Hallowvale's defence. But with the assistance of Verzik Vitur and his brother Ranis, he learned of a secret entrance into the castle of Queen Efaritay and managed to capture her husband Ascertes.[13] Efaritay surrendered in exchange for Ascertes' life.[14] Lowerniel had Ascertes turned into a vampyre, who became known as Vanstrom Klause.[15] Additionally, Lowerniel took Efaritay's weapon of choice, the Sunspear, which he would wield as his own.[16]

Thus, Lowerniel conquered Hallowvale, though Vanescula suspected that he was disappointed with this unsporting end to the conflict. Following the conquest, Lowerniel created the vampyric city of Darkmeyer on the site of Hallowvale's former capital, and set up the ghettos of Meiyerditch to serve as the vampyre's source of human blood tithes. He rewarded Verzik and Ranis for their contribution in ending the war, gifting the former with the Icyene royal castle, which Verzik modified into the Theatre of Blood.[17]

In the aftermath of Efaritay's surrender, a group of holdouts led by the former Saradominist Justiciar known as Phosani decided to defect to Lowerniel's cause, believing that Saradomin had abandoned them.[18] Lowerniel accepted Phosani's offer to convert her troops into blood tithes and thralls in exchange for their offering of Saradominist villagers, whom they led into a trap. He then allowed her and the other turncloaks to create a settlement of their own, which they did in an old hermitage east of Darkmeyer called Slepe, where she founded The Sisterhood.[19]

Under Drakan's rule, all of the local humans and werewolves were forced to pay blood tithes, although the inhabitants of Slepe were the only humans to willingly comply with the law.

Overlord of Morytania

During his rule, two major conflicts with Saradominist humans from the west unfolded. The first was a massive crusade launched by the Barrows brothers during the late Third Age, at the height of the God Wars, with the aim of reconquering Hallowvale from the vampyres. The brothers, empowered by their gifts from a mysterious stranger and leading an army of several thousand Saradominist soldiers and mercenaries, culled a great number of vampyres and gained significant ground into the heart of Morytania, but the crusade was stopped at the walls outside Meiyerditch due to the stranger's intervention, which caused the weakening and eventual death of the brothers.[1]

The second, beginning in the year 1100 of the Fourth Age, happened when Drakan, emboldened by his previous victories, attempted to expand westward into Misthalin across the River Salve through the Silvarea mountain pass, culminating in the Misthalin - Morytania War.[21] During this conflict, the Saradominists discovered previously unknown weaknesses of the vampyres thanks to the efforts of Ivandis Seergaze. Ultimately, the expansion was thwarted after a century of fighting, when Drakan's forces were pushed back across the Salve and the river was blessed by the Seven Priestly Warriors at the conflict's climax in 1200.[22] The temple of Paterdomus was built over the site of the blessing to protect the source of the River Salve.[23] Verzik Vitur, who had played a major role in the invasion, was rewarded once more for her service to Lowerniel with the Sanguinesti staff, which he had crafted himself.[24]

Some time after the Misthalin - Morytania War, Lowerniel banished his brother Draynor from Morytania for unknown reasons — likely due to his weakness, which was further exacerbated by crossing the blessed River Salve.[25]

At some point, Lowerniel once had a single human servant named Charos, who had a castle constructed for him on the north coast of Morytania.[26] Charos was talented in the art of spying, assassination, and negotiation. These were in part his own ability, further enhanced by the ring that he had fashioned.[27] However, he eventually disappeared, with some believing this was due to him attempting to use his abilities on Lowerniel, which would likely have no effect on him, and Charos's castle was left abandoned.[28]

In 1777 of the Fourth Age, humans came to Morytania to settle in the northern lands, building settlements like Port Phasmatys, and settling in existing buildings and ruins like Charos's castle. When Lowerniel heard of this, he immediately ordered them to pay the blood tithes or be destroyed. Though the others capitulated, the inhabitants of one of these settlements, Port Phasmatys, refused. Lowerniel proceeded to besiege the town, but the locals were able to enlist the help of an eastern necromancer called Necrovarus, who used the Ectofuntus to protect the town. Though successful in repelling the vampyres, Necrovarus had his own treacherous motives for doing so, trapping the villagers in a permanent state of undeath to serve as his followers. The locals died and became ghosts, forcing Lowerniel to leave the town as it was, since the ghosts were of little use to him.

Lowerniel is responsible for the unknown vile magic that turned the once prosperous landscape of Hallowvale into a harsh land of decay and death, creating gloomy environments such as Mort Myre Swamp and Mort'ton; a strange "mist" was unleashed that turned the people of Mort'ton into Afflicted,[29] and the shades beneath were freed from their catacombs.[30] Although a tithe was attempted, the blood obtained was so foul that Lowerniel had the town left alone, as the inhabitants proved to be no threat.

Lowerniel also created the Haemalchemy Laboratory, which found disturbing results. The lab discovered that the vampyres could survive without blood, and also uncovered the viability of blisterwood weaponry. Vanescula suspected that the former would mean that he would likely not survive, as history had shown that current leaders did not survive fundamental changes to society.[31] The latter proved to be deadly against vampyres, including the trueborn vyre nobility.[32] The lab also researched ways to strengthen the vampyre's immunities to conventional weaponry.[33]

A massive mine was excavated to the south-west of Morytania, which provided Lowerniel access to numerous ores. However, when a disturbing secret was found within the mines, Lowerniel had the mine destroyed, with everyone working there killed to keep its secret safe. Lowerniel had one of his followers, Treus Dayth, imprisoned to guard the mine, his tortured soul still remaining even in death to protect its secrets.

Wishing to learn more about the Shadow Realm, Lowerniel gave a dark beast to a vampyre researcher to study it, promising a massive blood reward in return. The vampyre researcher managed to manipulate the dark beast to travel into the Shadow Realm,[34] where it gained the name Sotetseg, but the results of the research remain unknown, since the researcher opted to go into the Shadow Realm to meet the beast's mysterious "master" on the other side.[35]

Scorning what he viewed as complacent "farming" of blood and recognising that the vampyres needed to return to their old way of life, Lowerniel returned to Vampyrium to reflect on his past. He recalled the Yarasa, a cunning, powerful, and agile race that the vampyres had fought against before Zaros had arrived.[36] When the eight tribes were united, they were able to defeat the Yarasa, the remaining survivors being lured out and killed in a graceless "slaughter" which deeply disgusted Drakan, filling him with shame for having taken part in it.[37] However, Xarpus, the king of the Yarasa, had evaded all such attempts. Lowerniel, knowing that he was likely still alive, set out to find and capture Xarpus. He stated he would bear no regrets should he fall, but he was able to overpower the Yarasa king and imprison him in the Theatre of Blood as a gift to Verzik Vitur.[38]

Drakan has also become obsessed with the Stone of Jas during this time, so much so that he has neglected affairs of state almost entirely due to his frustration in having lost it, as Vanescula chidingly remarks.[39] It is unknown at what point the Stone was present in the daeyalt essence mine, only that its former plinth therein now lies empty. Having personally witnessed Zamorak's ascension to godhood, it is possible Drakan desires a similar gain in power for himself, and sees the Stone as a means to this end.

The Myreque Rebellion

Lowerniel Drakan makes his first appearance in years.

At some point, Lowerniel learned of the existence of the Myreque, and tasked Vanstrom with dismantling the rebel cell. Although they long remained hidden, Vanstrom was eventually able to locate the cell after enlisting the help of an unassuming adventurer, but was able to kill only two of the members before the rest escaped. From this encounter, Drakan also learned that his brother, Draynor, had been slain; although they had not been on good terms, his brother's death angered him. Soon after, Ranis was killed by the same human that had killed Draynor, which made Drakan furious.

Due to the growing vampyre population, shrinking human population, and Drakan's lack of leadership, the vampyre nobles became increasingly desperate. Vanescula, believing that Lowerniel was no longer fit to rule due to his single-minded obsession with the Stone, sought to dispose of him,[40] but could not do so herself, as the nobles were still loyal to Lowerniel.[41] She recruited the Myreque to assist her in their shared goal of taking out Lowerniel.[42] Vanescula brought the Myreque to Castle Drakan to dispose of her brother, much to Vanstrom's surprise, as he wondered how she had managed to "capture" all of them.

As the two nobles were talking, Lowerniel suddenly emerged from the castle, immediately aware of her intentions.[43] Disappointed with his sister's actions, he demanded the truth. Vanescula admitted to him that she believed he was unfit to rule, as he was doing nothing to address the growing population and faltering supply of blood. Lowerniel stated that he had simply allowed her to do whatever she wanted, as her trifles were insignificant to him, but Ranis' death had prompted him to step out once more to stop the uprising. With little effort, he slew Vanescula's vyres and most of the remaining members of the Myreque, before easily overpowering Vanescula and knocking her out.[44] Lowerniel then looked at Vanstrom, who was shocked by his display of power. He asked him if he was still loyal, and Vanstrom nervously told him that he was. Satisfied with his response, Lowerniel tasked Vanstrom with defeating the rest of the Myreque before teleporting away with his sister.

The Blood Moon Rises

Following the capture of Safalaan and his sister, Lowerniel ordered all the vyres to gather outside the castle. There, he revealed his disgust with how the vampyres had changed from their origins as ruthless hunters[45] and decreed a return back to Vampyrium, much to the surprise and shock of many present.[46] However, in order for all of the vampyres to return to Vampyrium, the portal there would have to be powered by an immensely large amount of blood; noticing that a blood moon would soon rise over both Gielinor and Vampyrium at the same time, Lowerniel declared another Night of the Blood Moon festival be held.[47] Although some nobles, such as Jovkai and Myrmel objected, they ultimately complied and began gathering a human quota to power the portal back home. Before they did so, he exposed the adventurer and Ivan, but his people were unable to capture both. He then returned to Vampyrium, gathering blood from Safalaan to continue powering the portal between the two worlds. However, his stockpile was ultimately destroyed by the adventurer, and before they could leave, he shut the portal and initiated a hunt against them and his sister.

The group was able to avoid Lowerniel until they reached the forest, where they engaged in a brief scuffle before splitting. Lowerniel managed to intercept the adventurer and asked them to reconsider his proposal, as the departure of the vampyres would mean that the people of Morytania would know peace. The adventurer refused, not willing to sacrifice the masses of innocents that would be otherwise slaughtered in his proposal.[48] Before he could fight them, Efaritay and several Aranei arrived, the latter immediately piling on him to allow Efaritay and the adventurer to escape. Realising where they were coming from, Lowerniel stormed the Jovkai castle, killing all the aranei that were deployed to stop him and breaching their defences despite the adventurer's assistance. Upon entering the throne room, he was surprised to see Sugadinti alive, but promised to let them go if they gave either Efaritay or Safalaan to him. Refusing either choice, another chaotic battle ensued in which he recaptured Efaritay before ordering the vyres back to the castle to begin the slaughter. When Lord Myrmel voiced his opposition, Lowerniel immediately smited him into a bloody pulp to power the portal before the adventurer, Sugadinti, Ivan and the Nylocas Queen confronted him. At yet another fight, Safalaan, who had since been transformed into a Wyrd, pounced Lowerniel and managed to clip his right wing off before tumbling into Vampyrium with him.

Shaking Safalaan off, Lowerniel went to the rooftop of the castle as the adventurer prepared to take him down. Commenting on their strength and how the odds were still very much against them, Lowerniel was eager to fight the adventurer, not caring whether he won or lost because he was exactly where he wanted to be — his home.[49] Despite the numerous abilities at his disposal and bloody battle he participated in, Lowerniel was ultimately slain by the adventurer.

Because your plots are so insignificant to me, that I do not even care to pay attention to them. But now Vanescula, now you have my attention. And now, you will be reminded what it means to cross the Lord of Vampyrium."
  45. ^ Lowerniel Drakan in The Blood Moon Rises. Old School RuneScape. "It has been a long time since I last stood before the vampyres of Morytania. I thought I had prepared myself for what I would see. Yet as I stand here now, I see that I was wrong. To see what you have all become... The ways you stand... The ways you dress... You disgust me. You have become pathetic. Weak. None of you are worthy to be called vampyres anymore."

"You see, for a long time now, I have fought to return us to what we were always meant to be, but every time the answer came close, it slipped away. Now though... Now the answer is finally in my grasp. Thanks to my dear sister, I finally have the means with which to bring about our salvation. I finally have the means for us to return home. [...] I would see us return to lives of strength! I will take us back to a land where we will live as we were meant to! Not as royalty! Not as aristocrats! No. We will be hunters once more."
  47. ^ Lowerniel Drakan in The Blood Moon Rises. Old School RuneScape. "With the blood of the half-icyene, I have been able to create a portal to travel to and from Vampyrium, but his blood alone isn't enough to transport us all. For that, more will be needed. Human blood. Vampyre blood. It makes no difference. The half-icyene is the catalyst. The rest matters not. But one way or another, sacrifice will be required. [...] A blood moon will soon rise over these lands, and it will do so on the exact same night that one rises over Vampyrium. And so, on that night, we shall finally hunt again, for at long last, we shall experience the Night of the Blood Moon once more."
  48. ^ Lowerniel Drakan in The Blood Moon Rises. Old School RuneScape. "In truth, however, the day we stopped being hunters and started being farmers is the day we lost who we were. That is why I will bring an end to it. Surely you must understand that I am the only one that offers hope for your kind. If I get my way, there will be no more vampyres in Morytania. Your people will finally be free once more. [Player: But how many will have to die first for that to happen? How many dead humans will power that portal of yours? It's too high a cost!]"
  49. ^ Lowerniel Drakan in The Blood Moon Rises. Old School RuneScape. "But now, here you stand. You understand that even with me in this state, the odds are very much against you. Yet despite that, you stand here all the same. You. A mere human... I don't even know your name. But even if you succeed here... Even if it is you who will rise and I who will fall... it does not matter, for I am right where I need to be... Home."
