Sun Queen Zyanyi Arkan is the current ruler of the kingdom of Varlamore. Her residence is within the royal palace in Civitas illa Fortis, the kingdom's capital, where the Kualti, her elite guard, work to keep her safe.

She owns a pet snake named Ikniu.

History

Early History

Zyanyi's family, the Arkans, have had a prominent influence in Varlamore politics. Her great-grandfather, Mezpah Arkan, took the position of king as the first of the Arkan dynasty following Imafore's betrayal and execution.

When Zyanyi was young, she became a champion at the Fortis Colosseum.^[1]

An old Varlamorian tradition states that the current ruler of Varlamore should unite with a Teokan of Ralos, as they would need the guidance of Ralos' light the most. Zyanyi was willing to revive this tradition, which the current Teokan of Ralos, Servius, accepted, and the two had a son named Itzla.^[2] Itzla describes his familial relations to them as being "a convoluted mess".^[3]

Re-establishing ties

After learning that the Council of Great Kourend was overthrown by the people and a king was crowned, Zyanyi decided to pay Great Kourend a visit, seeking to establish ties with its new king, Lord Kandur Hosidius. Soon after her meeting with him at a celebratory feast, Kandur was assassinated, resulting in his elder son Artur being appointed king. Although eager to restore relations with Great Kourend, she was worried about Artur's inexperience in politics and the instability rocking the nation seeing how fast Kandur was killed.

At some point after the visit to Great Kourend, Zyanyi decided to send a delegation to the capital of Misthalin, Varrock, sending Servius and her son to initiate diplomatic relations with King Roald. During the visit, a passing adventurer caught wind of an assassination attempt on Servius and stopped it.

Growing Troubles

Following the attempt on Servius's life in Varrock, the Twilight Emissaries launched another attack on the Teomat, injuring Servius. After this attack, the Teokan of Ranul, Metzli, went missing.

Itzla wanted to investigate the cult further, though Zyanyi asked him to drop the investigation. Her son ignored her warnings, asking the adventurer to work with him and soon discovering that the cult was led by Metzli. After infiltrating the Twilight Emissaries under the guise of prospective members, they discovered that the cult sought the Mokhaiotl. The cult kidnapped Itzla and left the adventurer to face Amoxliatl's wrath, but they were able to escape and informed a now-recovered Servius of the news. Servius told them that Zyanyi would not be pleased with the turn of events and would likely devote more resources and personnel to putting an end to the cult.

Zyanzi later requested an audience with the adventurer, knowing of their role in her son's capture. The adventurer promised to amend their mistake, and she allowed them to do so. She learned from Forebearer Janus that the cult intended to perform the Gathering to break the seal on the archives, torturing and killing him in the process. During their investigation, they discovered there was a traitor in Cam Torum, prompting Zyanzi to meet with Highlord Katlo. Her presence was to throw the cultists off, as she went to the Crypt of Tonali afterwards to prepare the defence, which held off an attack by the Twilight Emissaries. With her Tonali forces and the adventurer's assistance, they were able to repulse the attack and severely weaken the cult's leadership, with Metzli and Ennius killed during the attack and Furia captured. Her forces later captured Teumo, extraditing him back to Cam Torum in return for a new minerals deal. Alongside this, she began looking for a new Teokan of Ranul to replace Metzli.

Trivia

The name Zyanyi is similar to the word "Zyanya" in the Zapotec languages, meaning "eternal" or "forever".
The snake seen on her is a reference to surviving Mayan art and texts, where the Mayan elite would dance with boa snakes or large snake staves.
