Smoke spells are one of four types of Ancient Magicks combat spells and the only type of spells that can inflict poison on their targets. They are the weakest of the Ancient Magicks, but can be used to provide passive damage on longer fights through poison damage.
Smoke spells have a 1/8 chance to poison on a successful hit. When using the multi-target spells, poison can be inflicted on up to nine targets in a 3x3 grid around the targeted enemy. Poison severity for the lower-level spells (Smoke Rush and Smoke Burst) is 10, while poison severity for the higher-level spells (Smoke Blitz and Smoke Barrage) is 20. Poison severity decreases once and inflicts poison damage every 30 ticks (18 seconds). All variants of the ancient sceptre increase poison severity by 10%.
When used with a smoke ancient sceptre, smoke spells additionally reduce a poisoned target's healing by 20% for 6 seconds, after taking damage from a smoke spell.
Due to the low damage dealt by smoke spells, they are not commonly used outside of specific scenarios. Other methods of applying poison (such as a serpentine helm or poisoned dragon dagger) are generally more reliable, and thralls generally provide better damage over time than poison from smoke spells.

Smoke ancient sceptre
The related smoke ancient sceptre has the added effect of reducing a poisoned target's healing by 20% for 10 ticks (6 seconds) after taking damage from a smoke spell.
The target does not need to have been poisoned from smoke spells specifically for the smoke ancient sceptre's effect to trigger. For example, an abyssal tentacle (25% chance to poison on a successful hit, or 50% when using its special attack) or emerald bolts (e) (55% chance to poison) could be used to poison an enemy, then the smoke ancient sceptre could be used when a boss begins to heal. Gear with a high chance or guarantee to poison (such as using a serpentine helm with toxic weapons) can be very effective here. To increase accuracy for the smoke ancient sceptre, weapons that drain enemy stats (for example, the accursed sceptre or eye of ayak special attacks) can also be used.
In practical use, there are very few encounters with healing mechanics where the smoke ancient sceptre could be effective, aside from potentially PvP combat. Most bosses with healing phases are also immune to poison, and those that are not either heal too sporadically, too briefly, or with too high of a Magic Defence to make the smoke ancient sceptre effective. Some situations where the effect can be moderately useful are against Scorpia, revenants, and Scurrius.
