Aris Maye[1] is a fortune-teller who resides in a large tent outside Varrock town square. She is notable for being the start point of the Demon Slayer quest, in addition to being prominently featured in Recipe for Disaster.

She possesses great knowledge about the history of Gielinor and has vast magical powers; for example, she casts a Tempus Cessit spell in the beginning of Recipe for Disaster in order to stop time. She is also quite old, with her exact age being a mystery.

Treasure Trails

  • Aris is the solution to the elite cryptic clue: Varrock is where I reside, not the land of the dead, but I am so old, I should be there instead. Let's hope your reward is as good as it says, just 1 gold one and you can have it read.
  • A beginner emote clue reads as follows: "Blow a raspberry at Aris. Equip a gold ring and a gold necklace."

Age

When asked how old she is, Aris tells the player to "Count the number of legs on the stools in the Blue Moon inn, and multiply that number by seven."

This curiously can result in multiple potential answers and is up to player interpretation.

  • If taken at face value, the bar of the Blue moon inn has 12 total seats, consisting of 5 tall 'Bar stools' and 7 shorter 'stools'. This would be a total of 48 legs, and an estimated age of 336.
  • There are an additional 7 small benches scattered around the premises (upstairs and outside) that have two legs each and could be added for a total age of 434.

However, a subtle clue guides players towards a third answer.

  • Only the four stools next to the tables with matching tablecloth can be examined. With the resulting text A comfy stool. confirming they should be counted. Oddly, every similar seating-object within the bar's premises seems to intentionally lack any ability for a player to discern their name, which is uncommon enough behaviour that it's reasonable to suspect it's an intentional part of the puzzle.
    • This unusual behaviour implies only four of the seats are truly 'Stools' to the player's eyes and with 16 legs across them puts Aris at an age of 112.

In RuneScape Classic, there were only two stools with a total of eight legs, which would make her 56 years old.

Trivia

  • Aris used to be referred to as a gypsy. The term is sometimes used to describe the Romani peoples, an ethnic group that originated from north-western India. However, on 9 November 2022, the term was removed from both her name and her examine text due to its potential to be used as a racial slur to denote illegality or irregularity.
  • During Recipe for Disaster, she refers to herself as the Wise Old Man's "bubbykins", indicating a possible relationship between the two. The Culinaromancer also exclaims "You!" after spotting Aris, suggesting that they may have battled before.
