Cave horrors can be assigned as a slayer task starting at level 58 Slayer and 85 combat by Chaeldar, Nieve, Mortimer, and Duradel. Cave horrors are found exclusively in the Mos Le'Harmless Cave, requiring completion of Cabin Fever.

You must wear a witchwood icon to fight cave horrors at melee distance, otherwise they will use a special attack which always deals damage equal to 10% of the player's base Hitpoints level, rounded down (e.g. 9 damage at 96). This can be completely mitigated by using Protect from Melee, or using a safespot.

A light source is also required to fight them without taking additional damage, unless a fire of eternal light is lit.

Cave horrors attack with Magic-based melee, meaning that Protect from Melee will negate the damage, but high magic defence will help when not praying. They have fairly low Hitpoints, and they are relatively spread apart, so it is generally best to use a fast-firing Ranged weapon like a toxic blowpipe, magic shortbow (i), Hunters' sunlight crossbow, or Karil's crossbow. If using Melee, it is recommended to use equipment that provides high Prayer bonus (such as Proselyte armour) and always use Protect from Melee so a better amulet can be used. A dwarf multicannon can also be used to speed up kills. Cave horrors can alternatively be safespotted by using the mushrooms, stalagmites, and boulders inside the cave, such as the area by the swamp near the cave entrance.

Additionally, if using melee, it is helpful to bring a way to cast Bones to Peaches (or the tablet version) as having good magic defence lets you out-heal their damage with the peaches. This can help save prayer potions and extend trips to the cave with extra healing. A herb sack, seed box, log basket, and reagent pouch should be brought as well, as herbs, seeds, unnoted mahogany logs, and limpwurt roots are commonly dropped.

Equipment

This setup is used if planning to fight the cave horrors with use of Protect from Melee, to negate all damage and use a stronger amulet. Prayer gear should be the focus to save on prayer potions, as strength gear will have diminishing returns due to their low health making them prone to overkill damage. The abyssal whip can be substituted for any melee weapon, as cave horrors are not specifically weak to any style.

  • Before obtaining a black mask, replace with the best melee strength or prayer headgear item available.
  • Kandarin headgear can be substituted with any light source, or replaced with more supplies if the Fire of eternal light is built.

This setup is used if planning to fight the cave horrors without use of Protect from Melee, to save on using prayer potions. Most ranged armours are effective, as they will typically have high magic defence. The abyssal whip can be substituted for any melee weapon, as cave horrors are not specifically weak to any style.

  • The Mixed hide top can be brought instead for +2 strength bonus, but -15 magic defence compared to black dragonhide.
  • Runes are brought for casting Bones to Peaches to provide more food and lengthen trips, and Teleport to house to leave for resupply. Tablets for both may be brought instead, if neither is unlocked.
  • Before obtaining a black mask, replace with the best melee strength or prayer headgear item available.
  • Kandarin headgear can be substituted with any light source, or replaced with more supplies if the Fire of eternal light is built.

This setup is used for safespotting the cave horrors, using one of the many safespots available throughout the cave, with some examples provided below. Any fast ranged weapon will prove effective, and no resources are needed as the player cannot be reached by the cave horrors to be attacked.

  • Proselyte can be worn instead to save on prayer potions, for only a small loss in dps.
  • Prayer potions are not needed if not intending to use Eagle eye.
  • Runes are brought for casting Telekinetic Grab to avoid needing to leave the safespot, and Teleport to house to leave for resupply. Nature runes are simply stored in the pouch from the ones dropped by the cave horrors.
  • Before obtaining or imbuing a black mask, replace with the best ranged or prayer headgear item available.
  • Kandarin headgear can be substituted with any light source, or replaced with more supplies if the Fire of eternal light is built.

Cannoning

One of the most optimal cannon placements in the cave.

One of the best locations to place a cannon is the location shown in the image to the right. By placing the cannon here and standing on the location shown in the screenshot, horrors that are targeted by the cannon will never be able to attack you. This is due to the monster's pathfinding causing them to be stuck on the wall. There are two safe spots present in this image. The spot with the player standing in it currently is the safe spot for the horror closest to them. If there is no monster standing in that location, but there is a horror standing in the position of the second horror in the image, then moving south by a single tile will allow you to shoot the other horror, while still in relative safety. However, this secondary safe spot is much less reliable.

If you want to let the cannon do all the work, without attacking at all, standing exactly two squares diagonally to the north-west of the spot with the player in the image (the middle of the three walkable squares with a black tile visible on it) will serve as a completely safe square, which can never be attacked by any monsters in the cave because of the blocking objects and walls around it.

Below are some visual examples of areas where Cave horrors can be safespotted, but there are many more that are not shown throughout the cave, as there are many small obstacles and tight corridors. Any of the safespots farther in the cave require protect from melee or a Witchwood icon to safely reach, but can be a useful option if the entrance is already occupied by another player.
