Gryphons can be assigned as a slayer task by Vannaka, Chaeldar and Mortimer after completion of the Troubled Tortugans quest. Additionally, both Nieve and Duradel may assign gryphons after the perk Wings Spread has been purchased.

Gryphons are found exclusively on The Great Conch. There are three lairs for gryphons; a western cavern, an eastern cavern (Slayer task only) and a lair in the centre of the island which leads to the Shellbane gryphon. Both the eastern and western caverns have a southern room that is multi-combat and cannon-able.

Gryphons attack with melee and have a special attack which causes knockback and moderate damage if the player's weight of their worn equipment is too low; this is 30 for normal gryphons and 40 for the boss. They are weakest to melee, ideally from stabbing attacks. While being a bit more resistant to magic, they have a 50% weakness to air spells.

Bringing the tortugan shield is not necessary for normal gryphons, but those who are fighting their superior, the dire gryphon, or the boss are required to use it, or their attacks will deal frequent and moderate damage, even through prayer. Dire gryphons are similar to the boss variant in mechanics.

A boss variant, the Shellbane gryphon, can be found in the centre lair and is only attackable on-task. It is a solo instanced boss and alongside melee, makes use of ranged attacks and also two additional special attacks, both of which are easily avoidable.

Gryphons have relatively poor drops and players who are not planning to kill the boss should avoid toggling them on for Nieve/Duradel. The boss itself has somewhat lacklustre drops too, but is slightly better compared to normal gryphons.

For players seeking gryphon tasks, they are recommended to use Vannaka; while the overall amount is lower than Duradel, gryphons are Vannaka's highest weighted task.

Slayer unlocks

Unlock Points cost Notes
Bigger and Badder 50 Increase the risk against certain slayer monsters with the chance of a superior version spawning whilst on a slayer task.
Wings Spread 80 Nieve and Duradel will be able to assign Gryphons as your task.
Gryphon and on 50 Number of gryphons assigned is increased by 80.

Equipment

Players who are not safespotting gryphons are recommended to use melee equipment. A minimum of 30 kg is required for normal gryphons and 40 for the shellbane gryphon to avoid taking damage from their special attack.

They are best killed in the south-western multicombat room of the eastern task-only cave using a venator bow and a dwarf multicannon. 30 kg can be reached in a maxed range setup by using a black mask (i) rather than a slayer helmet (i), using a granite ring, or by substituting avernic treads (max) for echo boots. Bring a tortugan shield for the superior, and a cannon.
