Dame Elessia, also referred to as The Mad Angel, was an inhabitant of Wyrmscraig, and the creator of the sunstone golem that replaces her as the Mad Angel. She is referred to throughout the Fallen From Grace quest. While her race is not stated, she is likely an Icyene.
History
At some point during Lowerniel Drakan's invasion of Hallowvale during the Third Age, Elessia was taken prisoner by the vampyres. She was rescued at great expense by Saradominist forces,[1] but during her captivity she was afflicted with a mysterious condition or illness. This condition is implied to be a form of vampyrism, with her being described as more bloodthirsty in combat[2] and her skin and appearance becoming pale and more ragged.[3] While Elessia believed she could continue fighting without issue, one day her condition overcame her and she killed an unnamed man.[4]
At some point after her rescue, she and some companions abandoned Hallowvale due to her worsening condition and guilt over the murder; fleeing by sea in an attempt to find a cure. They would eventually settle on Wyrmscraig and founded the settlement of Auchrie.[5] According to the stories referred to by Cormac, Elessia helped build Auchrie and kept the settlers safe while living among them, though as her condition continued to worsen, her companions eventually constructed Ardeaglais in an attempt to cure her through faith.[6][7] When her condition deteriorated to the point that she threatened the safety of the other inhabitants on the island, she was locked away there on her own orders;[8] she was likely transforming into a wyrd. In return for her protection of the island, the inhabitants were supposed to regularly deliver tithes of human blood to the church,[9] or else she would begin to take innocent people.[10] The stories referred to her as "The Mad Angel" rather than by her name.
Shortly prior to the events of Fallen From Grace, Keenan, an inhabitant of the island, visited Ardeaglais in an attempt to learn more about the Sunstone monolith,[11] and was killed by Elessia. In a moment of clarity after his murder, Elessia wrote her Final letter, apologising for her actions and explaining that she is leaving the island, and leaving a sunstone golem to replace her as the Mad Angel protecting the island.[12] From the information obtained by examining Keenan's body during the quest, this likely took place a day or two before the player's arrival.
