Aberrant spectres can be assigned as a Slayer task at level 60 Slayer and level 65 combat by various Slayer masters. They can be found in the Stronghold Slayer Cave, the second floor of the Slayer Tower, and in Deepfin Mine.

A nose peg or Slayer helmet is required when fighting aberrant spectres. Without either of those equipped, they will use a special attack which hits through protection prayers and drain the player's stats very quickly.

Aberrant spectres have a normal magic attack that has a max hit of 8. Protect from Magic will completely neutralize it. With Bigger and badder unlocked, the Superior variation, the Abhorrent spectre may spawn. The Abhorrent has a max hit of 33, and Protect from Magic will still prevent its normal damage.

Players assigned aberrant spectres may also choose to kill Deviant spectres in the Catacombs of Kourend. Deviant spectres are generally not preferred as they have have significantly higher defence, which yields lower Slayer experience rates while also having only marginally better drops. They do have access to the Catacombs droptable which includes pieces of the Dark totem, and also have their own superior variant, the Repugnant spectre, which will always drop a piece of the Dark totem. Deviant and Repugnant spectres share the requirement of a nose peg or Slayer helmet and Protect from Magic will negate all their damage.

As Undead monsters, the Salve amulet(ei) and its appropriate variations give a bonus to damage and accuracy against Aberrant spectres. However, this effect does not stack with the Slayer helmet, which is almost always preferred to the nose peg if available.

Aberrant spectres are a popular task for their very frequent herb drops. They have an over 60% chance to drop at least one herb and may drop up to three, so bringing a herb sack is highly recommended. They also commonly drop seeds, so a Seed box is also helpful. Beyond that, they have a few alchable drops.

A Cannon can be used in the Stronghold Slayer Cave and the Deepfin Mine, although these are not Multicombat areas and will require safespotting to cannon more than one at a time. Aberrant spectres killed in the Slayer Tower benefit from the experience bonus granted by completing tiers of the Morytania Diary. The Stronghold Slayer cave is near multiple teleportation methods, has Nieve or Steve directly outside, and has a bank very close. A bank chest can be built in a hotspot within the Deepfin Mine and accessed quickly via a shortcut requiring 84 Agility.

Aberrant spectres also have the Spectral attribute, so the Ectoplasmator can be carried to yield a small amount of Prayer experience with each kill.
