Spears are two-handed stabbing weapons used in melee combat. They belong to the Spear weapon category, along with hastae and a few other weapons. They are not to be confused with halberds, which have a longer attack range (as one may expect from a spear) and overall function differently.
They are obtained from either monster drops, purchasing from players, or smithing on the special anvil south of the Barbarian Outpost or Barbarian Village. Most spears can be poisoned with normal weapon poisons or karambwan paste.
Although they can only be used to train controlled and defensive attacks, spears are still arguably the most flexible weapons in the game, as they are the only weapons besides hastae, banners, and bladed staves to use Stab, Crush, and Slash attack styles, and their speed gives them damage per second close to that of scimitars. Their flexibility can be useful for saving inventory space during the Spirits of the Elid quest which requires that all three melee attack types be used.
Each attack style of the spear, except for Defensive, is Controlled and gives shared melee experience (Attack, Strength, and Defence). All styles also give Hitpoints experience.
All spears have an attack speed of 4 game ticks, except the Leaf-bladed spear and Guthan's warspear which have a speed of 5, and the Bone spear, which has a speed of 6. This makes the spear the fastest two-handed weapon type in the game, tied with claws.
An Iron spear or better is required for the completion of Tai Bwo Wannai Trio; although completing the quest is a partial requirement for crafting them, you can use ones purchased from NPC shops, the GE, or monster drops.
The hunter's spear is morphologically a spear, but varies completely from all others in being a ranged thrown weapon with utility for the Hunter skill. Similarly, the blue moon spear is a bladed staff, which is both a magic and melee weapon, but is similar to spears (rather than other bladed staves) in that it has a bonus in all 3 styles of melee.
Creation
The ability to smith a spear requires completion of the Barbarian Smithing section of the Barbarian Training miniquest as well as completion of the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest and level 5 Smithing.
