Anima Mundi is the life force of Gielinor.[1] It has a strong connection to spirit trees and other flora of the world, and is most alluded to by gnomes.[2][3][4] This connection appears to be reciprocal, as some types of vegetation are able to assert influence over the life force of the world.[5] Anima is fed by life.[6]
The Tasakaal took on the purpose of serving the balance between life and death to protect the anima of Gielinor. According to them, without life there is no anima, but because life can also destroy and endanger the anima, it must be kept under control.[6][7]
When Argento was killed, Hazelmere felt a sudden pain, believing it to be the Anima Mundi crying out for the death of the spirit tree.[2]
According to a gnome child, the Anima Mundi works in mysterious ways.[8] He also states that when a cabbage is plucked from the soil, its connection to the Anima Mundi is irreversibly severed.[4] However, it appears that bigger vegetation can withstand severance from the Anima Mundi for slightly longer, as it is possible for the player to briefly uproot their house's spirit tree in order to rotate it (albeit not without the tree experiencing intense pain and possibly irreversible damage).[9]
The elder-dragons, proposed to exist in the book of folklore, may be associated with the Anima Mundi in some manner as well, as folklore depicts them in terms reminiscent of the Anima, stating that "their lifeforce was linked to the life of the world itself".[10]
