Kitten

Kittens are young pet cats that can follow the player. In order to obtain a pet kitten, a player must complete the Gertrude's Cat quest, after which Gertrude will give them a kitten as part of the reward. The first kitten is free, and each kitten after that is 100 coins, but players cannot own more than one kitten at a time. If a fully grown cat is put into the player-owned house Menagerie, another kitten can be obtained from Gertrude. The kitten itself cannot be stored in the Menagerie. If players have an activated ring of charos(a), they are able to charm Gertrude into allowing them to choose a specific colour kitten. Otherwise, players will be given a kitten of a random colour.
Kittens appear as either the player's follower or as an item in the inventory. To change the kitten from an item to a follower, drop the kitten from your inventory. Once it is following you, selecting "Pick-up" with right click will return the kitten back to the inventory.
A kitten can catch rats via the Chase Vermin option in its Interact menu, which has a success rate of 10% (or 40% during Ratcatchers). Any colour of kitten can be turned into a generic Hell-kitten by chasing the hell-rats in Evil Dave's basement, or morphed back into its original colour by feeding it a bucket of milk.
Kittens may be spoken to. This requires a Catspeak amulet until enough progression is made in Dragon Slayer II. The responses are noticeably more child-like than grown cats, and Hell-kittens' responses are more devilish. The kitten's responses are chosen from a random list of phrases, unless they are very hungry or lonely, in which case their dialogue will reflect this.
Players can also shoo away their kitten from the right-click "Interact" menu using the "Shoo away" option. Beware that having a kitten out while a player's membership runs out can also cause it to be shooed away.[1]
Combat stats
When fighting Hell-Rat Behemoths, the King rat, or in the Rat Pits, cats have the following combat stats:[2]

Caring for a kitten
Unlike other pets, kittens grow and will need to be fed and interacted with while out in the world (not in item form in the bank or inventory). Additionally, they cannot be stored in pet houses. A player can build a pet feeder inside the menagerie of their player-owned house to automatically care for a kitten following the player if it gets hungry or lonely while the player is in the house.
Hunger
24 minutes after the kitten is last fed, the player is warned that the kitten is hungry. If the kitten is not fed after 3 minutes, the player gets a second warning indicating it is very hungry (). If then it is not fed within the next 3 minutes, the kitten will run away. Every time the kitten is fed, the timer resets to 24 minutes.
Any raw or cooked fish that is not exclusively caught from Barbarian fishing, Aerial fishing, Neypotzli, or the Ruins of Camdozaal can be used to feed a kitten. Fish from Barbarian fishing may be gutted with a knife, and the resulting caviar or roe may be fed to the kitten, though fish offcuts or fish chunks from aerial fishing cannot. Players often use cheap fish such as raw sardines or the stackable raw karambwanji for extended trips. Frog spawn may also be used to feed a kitten. Blighted anglerfish, manta rays, and karambwans can be used to feed a kitten, even outside of the Wilderness. Infernal eels, Sacred eels, Raw cave eels, and Raw slimy eels cannot be used to feed a kitten, and only result in , only the cave eel will become edible after being cooked however.
Players can also feed kittens by giving them a bucket of milk. The bottomless milk bucket works for this.
Attention
A fresh kitten can go without attention for 25 minutes before it warns the player that it needs attention. If its needs are not met after 7 minutes, the kitten will cry out it's feeling lonely (). Finally, if its cries for attention are not heard in another 7 minutes, the kitten runs away.
The kitten can be stroked, fulfilling its need for attention for 18 minutes before another warning is issued. When stroked more than once, the kitten is satiated and won't complain for another 25 minutes, instead of the 18 minutes for a single stroke. This can be done by opening the kitten's right-click "Interact" menu, and then selecting "Stroke". The player may also use a ball of wool on the kitten to play with it, making it not ask for attention for 51 minutes. This will not use up the ball of wool, which will stay in the player's inventory.
If a pet feeder is built in the menagerie of a player-owned house, a kitten will not go hungry nor require attention so long as the player stays in their house.
Growth
After three hours of following the player, their kitten will grow into an adult cat, which no longer needs food or attention. You can check the amount of time that you still have to care for your kitten by right-clicking on it and choosing the "Interact" option. Then you can select the third dialogue option, "Guess age".
A growth counter is set up as a variable specific to each player, which is incremented every 150 ticks (90 seconds) that a kitten is following the player.[3] A kitten will grow into a cat after the counter has recorded 120 growth events, that is to say after three hours in total.[4] As certain actions can cause this timer to be reset, such as world hopping or using the call follower button, the time it takes for a kitten to reach maturity can be longer than three hours in practice.[5] The growth timer is paused during dialogue.[6] The exact point at which the player interacts with or feeds their kitten does not affect its growth timer.[7]

Trivia
- If players attempt to feed a kitten just before it would otherwise die of starvation, they will get a message saying "Your cat doesn't seem to be in the mood for a snack." in their chat box, before the cat passing away ("Your cat has passed away.").
- If you attempt to cast Low Level Alchemy or High Level Alchemy on a Kitten in your inventory, the Game chatbox will read "You can't do that to a defenceless kitten!" and the spell will not cast.
