Pet rock

A pet rock can be obtained from Askeladden during and after The Fremennik Trials quest. After the quest multiple pet rocks can be obtained by talking to him again.

Rocks are a good choice for a pet, as they do not require food or exercise.^[1] The pet rock is comfortably held in both hands, meaning it cannot be used as a weapon; unarmed attacks are instead used while the pet rock is equipped. The pet rock does not confer any stat bonuses or penalties.

Pet rocks will happily live in the cat basket or menagerie of a player-owned house. When dropped inside a house, it will responsibly stay in its spot, patiently waiting for the player to come back. Picking your pet rock up while standing in your POH Menagerie is a task in the Medium Fremennik Diary. If a pet rock is dropped in the centre of a globe or boss lair display hotspot, the furniture can be built, but it will not be possible to retrieve the rock without destroying the furniture.

The pet rock is not lost on death, despite being a pet, and instead loyally waits at the player's gravestone.

In The Fremennik Trials quest, it is used to convince Lalli to give you some of his golden wool. A pet rock, cabbage, onion, and potato are the ingredients to make rock soup to please him.

During The Fremennik Exiles, the player must turn their pet rock into a polishing rock by submerging it in a large geyser, though due to the unbreakable bond developed during their time adventuring together the player cannot bring themselves to do so until their memories with the pet rock are wiped by Peer the Seer.

Unlike most pets, the pet rock will not follow the player when it is dropped, possibly due to the rock's shy nature. Because of this, it can be used to substitute a player while attempting to open the two-man doors in the Waterbirth Island Dungeon. To get further into the dungeon, a partner has to destroy the door-support from the other side of the ladder, although a special attack of a rune thrownaxe can do this instead.

The Xeric's talisman can be dismantled by using a pet rock on it, resulting in a message saying "You bash the talisman with the rock, smashing it into fang-like shards.".

"Who's a good rock then? Yes you are... You're such a good rock... ooga booga googa."

Your rock seems a little happier.

• Fetch

Want to fetch the stick, rock? Of course you do...

(Player puts the rock down and throws a stick which lands anywhere but forward. The rock will not move anywhere, because rocks naturally don't enjoy playing fetch. Player shrugs and picks the rock back up.)

• Stay

"Be a good rock..."

(Player sets the rock down, and stand up for a few seconds. Then the player picks the rock up, and pets it.)

• Appearance during Christmas

• The pet rock had a festive override wearing a rainbow partyhat during the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 Christmas events.
  • From 2016-2019, both the NPC and item forms had the override, but from 2020 onwards only the NPC model had the override.
• While a pet rock is dropped on a Waterbirth Island door switch, its examine text becomes "It's nice to be useful for a change."
• The pet rock's usage in the quest is based on a real-life folk story called Stone Soup.
• The player character has unique idle animations when they are wielding a pet rock.
• During The Fremennik Exiles quest, your pet rock will refuse to interact with you due to you having been exiled. It will say: "Your pet rock ignores you. You are an exile of the Fremennik Province."
• The rockfalls in the Motherlode Mine share the same model as the Pet Rock when they fall from the ceiling. As a result, the falling rocks wear party hats during Christmas.
