Giant squirrel
This copy was last processed on . The copied wiki revision is dated .
The giant squirrel is a skilling pet that can be obtained after completion of an Agility course, as well as from tagging marked ticket dispensers within the Brimhaven Agility Arena.
When a player receives the pet, it will automatically try to appear as their follower. At the same time, a message in the chatbox will state However, if a player receives a pet while having a follower out (for example, a cat), it will be placed into their inventory. When this occurs, the message in the chatbox will instead state
If a player's inventory is full and they have a follower already, they will not receive the pet; it must instead be claimed from Probita in East Ardougne.
On death, if a player loses their pet (as a follower or in your inventory) it will wander around the area for 30 seconds before despawning. Even if the player returns in time, the pet cannot be picked up, and can be reclaimed from Probita.
Variants
Players can also permanently unlock the ability to metamorph the giant squirrel by using certain items on them.

Drop rates
The table below includes the base chance of receiving the giant squirrel.[1] A player's actual chances of receiving it is 1 in B - (Lvl * 25), where B is the base chance and Lvl is the player's Agility level. This does not apply at the Hallowed Sepulchre, where the chance is static for each floor regardless of the player's Agility level.
The pet chance is rolled after completing an Agility course, when receiving an Agility Arena ticket within the Brimhaven Agility Arena, or upon teleporting back to the lobby via an obelisk in the Hallowed Sepulchre.
The fastest method on average to receive the giant squirrel is the Penguin Agility Course at all levels. If starting at level 30, at maximum efficiency it would take on average 142 hours (7841 laps) to receive the pet.
To find the pet chance for a method at a given level, refer to the skill pet chance calculator.

- ^ Including running back to the first obstacle.
- ^ These are the highest possible experience per hour rates, assuming perfect laps with no failures. Expect to get (slightly) lower rates, depending on Agility level and concentration.
- ^ These times assume a player with an Agility level of 99.
- ^ This lap time is only possible when casting Camelot Teleport to the Seers' Village bank after each lap. This teleport location is unlocked upon completing the hard Kandarin Diary. Players without this diary completion can expect a lap time of 43.8 seconds.
- ^ This xp rate is only possible when casting Camelot Teleport to the Seers' Village bank after each lap. This teleport location is unlocked upon completing the hard Kandarin Diary. Players without this diary completion can expect an xp rate of 46,800 Agility xp/hr.
- ^ This time to reach drop rate is only possible when casting Camelot Teleport to the Seers' Village bank after each lap. This teleport location is unlocked upon completing the hard Kandarin Diary. Players without this diary completion can expect to reach the pet drop rate in 398 hours.
- ^ This xp rate is only possible with completion of the hard Desert Diary. Players without this diary completion can expect an xp rate of 52,300 Agility xp/hr.
- ^ Following the grapple route players can expect to earn 50,000 Ranged experience, 4,300 Agility experience, and 4,300 Strength experience per hour.
- ^ This xp rate is only possible with completion of the hard Fremennik Diary. Players without this diary completion can expect an xp rate of 55,000 Agility xp/hr.
Hallowed Sepulchre
The drop rate at the Hallowed Sepulchre is static, and therefore unaffected by a player's Agility level.
The xp/hr and average lap time at Sepulchre vary greatly depending on the player's skill level. A player with an average lap time of 7 minutes 30 seconds to clear all 5 floors will reach the pet drop rate in 250 hours. The chance to obtain the pet only occurs once per run upon returning to the lobby, with the rate depending on the highest floor completed.
| Hallowed Sepulchre[5] | Static chance |
|---|---|
| Floor 1 | 35,000 |
| Floor 2 | 16,000 |
| Floor 3 | 8,000 |
| Floor 4 | 4,000 |
| Floor 5 | 2,000 |
Drop rate vs xp/hr combo chart
The below graph is a visualization of the two main considerations of a player training Agility or hunting the pet: Xp/hr and the average time to receive the pet. If a player only wants to receive the pet as quickly as possible and does not care about xp rates, then the most appealing options are those on the far left side of the graph where average time to receive the pet is the smallest. However, if a player wants the pet but would also prefer good xp rates, they should find a course on the left side of the graph that also has a large vertical bar, which indicates high xp rates.
The xp rates used in this graph are nearly the highest, if not the highest, possible that can be obtained at each course. The time to receive the pet assumes the player has 99 Agility.

Trivia
- The giant squirrel's appearance is based on the Indian giant squirrel in real life.
- The second and third dialogues are a reference to the episode "Squirrel Jokes" from the Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.
- The second dialogue might also be a reference to "Squirrel Songs" by Foamy the Squirrel.
- Giant squirrels may be fed acorns, resulting in the squirrel saying "Thank you! Ratatoskr be your guide and bring you many acorn trees!", this is in reference to the messenger squirrel of Norse mythology Ratatoskr. The message will also appear in the chatbox.
- The giant squirrel had a festive override wearing a yellow partyhat during the 2016 Christmas event, and a Santa hat in the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 Christmas events.
- Additionally, the dark squirrel had the override in 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024; the bone squirrel had the override in 2024.
- The chathead models had an override from 2017-2019, but did not override in 2016 and 2020 onwards.
- If the squirrel is obtained on the Brimhaven Agility Arena, it will be on the ground until picked up, but then clicking the "drop" option will fail with the message "You can't have a follower here".
