Clue scroll (beginner)

See this page for suggested methods of obtaining clue scrolls as well as for the most efficient setups for completing clue scrolls.

For completing individual steps, see Treasure Trails/Full guide.

Clue scroll sources

Opening impling jars is by far the quickest method to find clue scrolls. For some clue scroll levels it can get rather expensive however. Therefore there'll also be some other methods being mentioned in this section.

Other methods

See this section for some of the best methods outside opening impling jars. Drop rates are listed here as their base rates. Completing a tier of combat achievements increases the drop rates for clue scrolls of the same tier from applicable sources (excluding implings) by 5 %. See source pages for specific clue drop rates with combat achievement buffs.

Beginner clue scrolls

  • Looting Obor's chest or Bryophyta's chest for a guaranteed beginner clue scroll.
  • Killing hill giants for a 1/50 drop rate.
  • Killing minotaurs for a 1/60 drop rate of a beginner clue scroll.
  • Killing goblins for a 1/64 drop rate. Their low hitpoints and great numbers in a tight space make it very easy for players to get clue scrolls this way.
  • Killing Dark Wizards south of Varrock: 1/50 for level 7 wizards and 1/35 for level 20.
  • Killing Brutus for a 1/15 drop rate.

Easy clue scrolls

  • Pickpocketing Wealthy citizens for a 1/85 chance of an easy clue scroll. Once distracted, ~20 attempts are made with a single click every ~90s.
  • Pickpocketing H.A.M. Members for a 1/50 chance of an easy clue scroll.
  • Killing thugs with a ring of wealth (i) equipped for a 1/64 drop rate.
  • Killing swamp crabs for a 1/96 drop rate.
  • Killing goblins for a 1/128 drop rate of an easy clue scroll. Their low hitpoints and great numbers in a tight space make it very easy for players to get clue scrolls this way.
  • Looting Coffin (Hallowed Sepulchre) in the 1st floor for a 1/50 drop rate of an easy clue scroll.

Medium clue scrolls

  • Killing guards in Falador for a 1/128 drop rate (increased to 1/106 with completion of Falador medium diary).
  • Killing pyrefiends in the Wilderness God Wars Dungeon with a ring of wealth (i) equipped for a 1/64 drop rate of a medium clue scroll.
  • Looting the Stone chest for a 1/100 drop rate of a medium clue scroll. The fast respawn can compensate for the lower rate.
  • Pickpocketing gnomes for a 1/150 drop rate of a medium clue scroll.
  • Killing Scurrius for a 1/25 drop rate of a medium clue scroll.
  • Killing Jogres for a 1/129 drop rate of a medium clue scroll. Those are obtained passively when one looks for the Jogre champion scroll.
  • Looting Coffin (Hallowed Sepulchre) in the 2nd floor for a 1/50 drop rate of a medium clue scroll. The rate increases to a 1/25 drop rate for looting the 3rd floor.
  • Looting the Tarnished chest for a ~1/150 drop rate of a medium clue scroll. Compared to the Stone chest, this has a lower chance (scales with Thieving level) of being teleported, and does not require antipoison.

Hard clue scrolls

Elite clue scrolls

After the completion of the elite combat achievements, all elite clue scroll drop chances are increased by 5%.

Master clue scrolls

  • Giving one of each easy, medium, hard, and elite clues to Watson in exchange for a master clue scroll.
  • Completing an easy clue scroll for a 1/50 chance of receiving a master clue scroll.
  • Completing a medium clue scroll for a 1/30 chance of receiving a master clue scroll.
  • Completing a hard clue scroll for a 1/15 chance of receiving a master clue scroll.
  • Completing an elite clue scroll for a 1/5 chance of receiving a master clue scroll.

  • Use the skull sceptre to teleport to the Stronghold of Security to kill minotaurs for beginner clue scrolls
  • Use the right skull halves dropped by the minotaurs to recharge the skull sceptre
  • The chef's hat can be swapped for any full helm if more defence bonuses are needed
  • If your Defence level is high enough to easily kill minotaurs, you can choose to bank the platebody and legs for weight reduction purposes
  • A black pickaxe is preferred, since it weighs 0 kg, thus saving a bit of run energy over any other pickaxe

It is highly recommended to fill up your bank with bank fillers and the loot of gourmet impling jars, while having no placeholders of the teleport tabs, dust runes, and rune pouch. This way you can quickly withdraw 10 jars, open them and bank everything without having to withdraw big stacks of items again. It is also recommended to have the 12 other items in your inventory close to each other in the bank, so that you can quickly withdraw them once you manage to find a clue scroll.

Bank at the Shantay Pass using the Achievement Diary (Teleport Option 2) for quick access to Shantay for the Port Sarim jail step and quick access to the bank from the tele spot.

For ironmen, the recommended method of obtaining the clues is pickpocketing H.A.M. members.

Opening Impling Jars

Use deposit lock settings to lock caskets and scroll boxes. This allows 14 impling jars to be withdrawn, opened, and banked quickly. Once the Scroll box (medium) limit is reached, a bank tag loadout can be used to quickly re-equip gear.

If the Max cape is unavailable, it can be substituted with a Construct. cape. The following capes may also be kept in the bank for rare steps: Farming cape, Strength cape, Crafting cape, and Fishing cape.

Some other items that are useful to have stored in your bank are:

  1. ^ Used to get to the dead tree at Baxtorian Falls. Also used to get into Lumbridge Swamp Caves for the first time.
  2. ^ Used to quickly restore run energy. A Revitalisation pool can be used in place of this.
  3. ^ Provides access to the Desert Mining Camp.
  4. ^ Used to access the Lumbridge Swamp Caves in case you don't have the Fire of Eternal Light built.

Medium clues (hunting your own implings)

15000

This is a possible setup for player who wish to hunt their own Eclectic implings as a source of medium clues, while solving them as they go. This setup assumes you drop or alchemise the non-stackable loot from implings on the spot. If you want to keep the loot, simply bank them and refer to the other medium clue setup instead. This can be used by ironmen who cannot buy the implings but want to complete the clues as fast as possible. Adjust the inventory depending on the teleports you have available in your player-owned house, for example it is worth saving the inventory space if you have a Jewellery box and replacing it with more jars or other useful items (see below). Use standard spellbook for the teleports and casting Snare/Entangle on implings you fail to catch as they spawn.

This way you can quickly withdraw 10 jars, open them and bank everything without having to withdraw big stacks of items again. It is also recommended to have the 16 other items in your inventory close to each other in the bank, so that you can quickly withdraw them once you manage to find a clue scroll.
