Volcanic ash is obtained from mining ash piles found around the Fossil Island Volcano. Doing so requires level 22 Mining and grants 10 experience per drop, regardless of the number of ash mined at once.

They can also be obtained as drops from various monsters on Fossil Island including wyverns in the Wyvern Cave.

The amount of ash obtained is scaled to the player's Mining level, starting with one ash at level 22 and increasing by one for every 15 levels above 22, to a maximum of six ash at 97 (boosts can be used). Mining enhancers do not affect the yield when mining volcanic ash.^[1] At high Mining levels, it is possible to obtain over 6,500 ash per hour.

Volcanic ashes are used to create a variety of farming-related items.

• Two can be used on a bucket of supercompost to create ultracompost.
• 25 can be used on a compost bin and 50 on a Big Compost Bin, when the bins are completely filled with supercompost. This upgrades the supercompost into ultracompost.
• One is used with a harralander potion (unf) to create a compost potion. This requires 22 Herblore.
• If players have read the ash covered tome, they can have the Fertile Soil spell treat a farming patch with ultracompost instead of supercompost by casting the spell while having two volcanic ash in their inventory.
