Compost Bin

A compost bin is an immovable container where weeds, crops, herbs, fruits, and other Farming produce are placed to make compost, supercompost, ultracompost, or rotten tomatoes. Compost bins are located next to allotment/flower/herb patches. Noted items cannot be added to the compost bin.

A regular compost bin must be filled with 15 un-noted items before it can be closed to begin the rotting process. The big compost bin in the Farming Guild requires 30 items instead. Items cannot be retrieved from the bin once deposited, though the contents can be dumped out to discard them. Once closed, the bin cannot be opened until the rotting finishes after 35 to 70 minutes.

What the compost bin produces depends on the items that were used:

• Rotten tomatoes if the bin was entirely filled with tomatoes.
• Supercompost if the bin was entirely filled with supercompostable items.
• Regular compost if neither of the above apply.

Most harvested products of Farming can be added to a compost bin. In general, a product is supercompostable if and only if growing it requires 47 Farming or higher, but several exceptions apply:

• Potato cactus and cotton boll require greater than 47 Farming, but produce normal compost.
• Toadflax and some tree roots do not require 47 Farming, but are supercompostable.
• White tree fruit does not require 47 Farming, but requires completion of Garden of Tranquillity and is supercompostable.
• Cactus spines, nightshade, and all kinds of tree logs cannot be composted.

Items which are derived from products of Farming may or may not be compostable. For instance, watermelon slices are compostable, but pineapple rings are not. Any item may be used on a farmer to check whether the item will make compost or supercompost. If the item does not make compost at all, the message Nothing interesting happens. is displayed instead.

Because every item added must be supercompostable for the bin to produce supercompost, a warning dialogue appears if the player attempts to mix compostable and supercompostable items.

On normal worlds, compost bins can be filled while simultaneously harvesting a nearby allotment. Stand close to the bin and the nearest allotment patch, harvest a single crop, then click the allotment and use the crop already in your inventory on the bin in the same game tick. This does not work on PvP worlds or Deadman Mode worlds.

Once a compost bin containing any kind of compost has been opened, the compost may be upgraded before withdrawing it:

• Regular compost may be upgraded to supercompost by adding one dose of compost potion (even for the big compost bin).
• Supercompost may be upgraded to ultracompost by adding volcanic ash - 25 for a regular bin, and 50 for the big compost bin.

It is possible to upgrade the withdrawn buckets as well, but this is less efficient: one dose of compost potion is used per bucket instead of one dose for the entire bin of 15 (or 30) buckets, and 2 volcanic ash is used per bucket for a total of 30 (or 60) volcanic ash instead of 25 (or 50) for the entire bin.

Clicking the compost bin again after opening begins emptying it. If the bin contains any kind of compost, the player must have in their inventory empty buckets or a bottomless compost bucket that either contains the same kind of compost or is empty. If the player has both regular buckets and a bottomless bucket, the regular buckets are filled first.
