Seaweed spores are used in the Farming skill and require level 23 in the skill to grow them. They are planted at the seaweed patch in the underwater area of Fossil Island and provide giant seaweed when harvested. Players can pay Mernia to protect this patch by giving her 200 numulites.

Giant seaweed is often grown by players for a chance at obtaining Tangleroot due to the relatively high chance of obtaining it compared to the seaweed spore growth time. Ironmen grow giant seaweed for its exceptional molten glass output in the Crafting skill combined with Superglass make. Giant seaweed will quickly provide far more molten glass than regular seaweed.

Sources

Seaweed spores can be obtained via the following methods:

  • They may randomly appear when diving in shallow water within the underwater area beneath Fossil Island. 1-3 seaweed spores can spawn, and they will despawn in 30 seconds. Like marks of grace, they appear individually for each player. However, unlike marks of grace, they will instantly disappear upon logging out. Also unlike marks of grace, more than one spawn of seaweed spores can appear at a time. When they spawn, they release a cloud of bubbles, and all players whose spores spawn on that tick will spawn at the same tile.
    • A timer runs while the player is in an eligible part of the underwater area, which provides an opportunity for a seaweed spore to spawn at frequent intervals.[1] The interval has been observed to be as low as a single tick. There is a 1% chance a spore will be spawned whenever the timer ticks down.[2] How quickly a player picks up seaweed spores after they have spawned does not influence when the next spawn opportunity is granted.[3]
  • They can be obtained as a drop from ammonite crabs, lobstrosities and Fossil Island Wyverns.
  • They can be purchased from Mairin's Market in exchange for 20 mermaid's tears per spore.
  • They can be pickpocketed from Master Farmers.
  • They can be received from the Managing Miscellania activity by commanding subjects to work on the farm.

Average harvest yield

Giant seaweed has a minimum of 3 harvest lives, increasing by 1 for each tier of compost used (for a maximum of 6 when using ultracompost). While harvesting giant seaweed, there is a chance to not consume a harvest life dependent on the player's Farming level. This chance scales from 59.0% at level 1 to 82.4% at level 99, interpolating linearly in between.
