Ash piles can be found throughout the Fossil Island Volcano, and can be mined with level 22 Mining, granting 10 experience. When mined, they can produce soda ash and volcanic ash.

Unlike other ore rocks, ash piles can be mined several times before being depleted. Ash piles have a 1/4 chance of being depleted when they are mined. After being mined, ash piles take around 30 seconds to respawn.^[1]

Players cannot receive unidentified fossils from mining ash piles. However, they can still receive gems, clue geodes, and the rock golem.

Rocks produce either volcanic ash or soda ash on every successful mining attempt, and have a 1/4 chance to deplete each time they are mined.

The quantity of volcanic ash received depends on Mining level, starting with one ash at level 22 and increasing by one for every 15 levels above 22, to a maximum of six ash at 97 (boosts can be used). Mining enhancers do not affect the yield when mining volcanic ash.^[3]

The mining gem drop table has a 1/256 chance to roll on every mining attempt;^[4] if the player is wearing a charged amulet of glory, amulet of glory (t), or amulet of eternal glory, the probability increases to 1/64.2.^[5][6] If the table successfully rolls, the player may receive an uncut gem or nothing, and in either case can not receive an ore.^[7] This neither depletes the rock nor grants Mining experience. The rates shown are for every mining attempt.

The following items can drop together with the main resource. The rates shown are for a successful mining attempt.

• Celestial rings and signets provide an invisible +4 boost to Mining level, regardless of charges.
• Prospector kit boosts Mining experience by 2.5%.
• Amulet of glory increases the chance of obtaining gems when charged.
• Mining gloves, Mining capes, Varrock armour, and charged celestial rings do not provide any chance to receive extra resources.
